Ecommerce Website and Articles - Ideal Site Structure?

Hi Warriors,

I'm looking for advice with regards to an e-commerce shopping website that I'm working on.

The website is a shopping website, at the moment the site structure is shoppingsite .com / category / product-name

Now I would like to add articles to the website in order to grow the website and earn money from promoting affiliate offers and Adsense, but I'm not sure what's the best way to structure this.

What do you suggest? The site is a Wordpress site, now the problem comes in - if I add articles should they be added as posts or pages? I have read that posts seem to have the most benefit in terms of SEO (due to the use of tags and categories), and this creates a problem because all the products are posts.

The next problem is categories, for example I have a category called Books, now what if I want to add articles regarding teeth whitening? If I created a category called teeth whitening it would affect the categories shown all over the website, and affect the site structure in terms of visitor navigation in terms of the shopping site.

One option should be to do a separate Wordpress install such as shoppingsite .com /info - but will this option grow the main domain in terms of SEO? Is this a good option?

The front page of the site is currently showing all the latest products added.

So the question is, what is the best way to structure this site so I can run the shopping site and add articles to promote affiliate offers?

I would really appreciate your input, if you need any further details please let me know.

Looking forward to your input.

    Hi Oscar,

Your best option for eCommerce, usually is to use a platform built for eCommerce. Having said that you can organize your Wordpress categories to work the way you desire.

Just create a category titled "Blog", or "Articles", and post your articles to that particular category.

Optionally, you could create a separate blog directory for you articles by using the Multisite feature of Wordpress. Or, you could just create a totally separate blog on a different domain. All those should work equally well for promoting your website.

      Hi Don,

Thank you for your input - but the goal is to grow this domain into an authority website, so starting a different domain isn't really an option.

        Hi Oscar,

        Really, why not?

It has always worked very well for me.

Authority has absolutely nothing to do with domain names, nor IP addresses for that matter. Google doesn't rank websites, they rank individual pages. Page authority passes page-to-page exactly the same way, regardless of which domain it is on.

When it comes to "Authority", think about the web of pages your page is contained within, not just a specific website or domain name, that is how search engines look at your pages, perhaps you should as well.
