The best path to rank for highly competitive term?

Hi guys, I am trying to go after a few highly competitive term (8,000-9,000+searches per month over 2 million competing pages) and I am ranking on page 2 and 3 right now. I was wondering, what is the fastest and best way to page one, or even position one?

The strategy I have been using is carefully building high PR ( pr4, 5, 6) links from blogs that I contact the blog owner and do a guest post on their blog or get a link in their blog roll, I do this combined with creating unique content everyday on my site's blog. Right now I am building 1-2 high PR links a day, which I know does not sound like a lot but I am under the impression these links are quite powerful. I am working on a link wheel right now, so that should bring my site more links.

What else can I be doing to move my site up more quickly?

2 million competing pages IMO is not competitive, more like 50/100 million with pagerank 5,6 & 7 sites at the top.

What you need is high pagerank relevant links. To get there faster you need 4/5 closely related keywords. When you build a link to a keyword that is not your main keyword but very similar, you will notice they all rise in the serps.

So the keywords need to contain the same words or maybe a word less or more or in a different order or maybe different captilization or with stop words or your brand name.

This allows you to rotate your keywords and build links quite quickly, you also get lot of good movement from this in competitive serps.

You can also do this with keywords from your internal pages, so if your keyword was "free music downloads", then you could add a keyword from your internal pages i.e: "rihanna free music downloads", "micheal jackson free music downloads", etc all built to your homepage (in thousands of variations).

Just build HIGH QUALITY backlinks to your website.
Social Network websites (wordpress, tumblr, blogger, etc...) and Social Bookmarking websites (stumbleupon, digg) are great ways to build high quality backlinks.
If you have some money to invest, you can buy some Homepage Backlinks too. They'll be great to your website

    Cheers

Its not right that you have 2 million competitors. Google found 2 million keyword according to your search query.
You can build links in directories, article directories.

I don't like the whole get the high comp keyword. Better ways to get traffic with low comp keywords and you can still manage the same results. Instead of just those 2 links a day build other types of links, articles at directories, social bookmark your pages or build other links on authority sites. You can't just sit and think 2 links will get you far, you need more link juice, guest posting should be part of it as i find is good links but too much time spent making the webowner happy with the writing and whatnot. That time spent could be done with other links.

I think you need to diversify a little with different link types. If all your links are the same, then that looks obviously like you did them yourself. Try for some guest posts. I would go to Fiverr.com and order a variety of link types. But then I am all about outsourcing that type of work as it is boring for me. But if you want to do it yourself, that is what I would do.
