As Retsek says, the majority of free ones are a waste.

To get any value you really need to use a paid PR site .. that's an actual Press release site with news contacts.

Not just an article directory that got too big for it's boots .. and chances are some of them have had their ability to pass link juice turned off manually by Google.

If you don't have something people will find interesting you'll fall flat on your face.

^^ I'm not agree. I rescued my website from Panda sandbox using a free instant approval press release without even using an anchor text keyword. And the niche website survived Penguin too. There is a link juice in free PR's.

  we are doing daily press releases and only targeting paid sites like PRweb.com and webwire and a few other high ranking ones.
  
  Yes it costs us a fair bit, but driving traffic to sites and optin pages doing this, is working killer. We have a retired journalist we pay to write the releases too. This is very very powerful form of traffic, but it takes a while to master.

  There are plenty of sites that are spammy that have pagerank....plenty. I guess it all boils down to what you are trying to accomplish. Do you want to be lazy and just get auto-approved sites? Knock yourself out.....just pay $5.00 on fiverr and get a gadzillion links on those types of sites.....oh BTW, you won't get any rankings... or, if you do, they will be very short lived.

  1. SB Wire
  2. PR Buzz
  3. My PR Genie
  
  Try:
  PressDoc
  OfficialWire
  EmailWire
  
  You can also get infographics made for you and then you can go submit them to places. Probably for this infographics you could get away with free submission places.
