New to SEO and the Forum

Hey guys, my name is Jeremy, I am a 23 year old professional MMA fighter, and besides fighting I do not really have any job skills(I can flip a mean burger though) after reading some Tim Ferriss stuff, living with a tech guy who has some success with his blog and as the CEO of a small publishing company designed with a single New York Times Bestseller in mind, I have realized one thing: I need to get some "geek" skills if you will. I know how to effectively operate a computer, and that is about it.
I have two questions that I would love to get some feedback on:
1) Starting from scratch, are there any specific books you suggest I read or any skills I should bump to the top of my "to learn" list?
2) As far as SEO(which originally got me interested in learning tech skills) keep in mind I know nothing outside of a few articles I read last night, how would you suggest I go about learning this skill and then translating it into gigs, jobs, or whatever. Should I just go into super study mode, or take a course or what?

Thanks guys, I was trolling for a few hours before I joined up and the place is legit, full of the type of people I need to be around to soak up knowledge. See you all around the forums.

    1. If you want to learn the basic about SEO you should read 'SEO for Dummies':
Amazon.com: Search Engine Optimization for...Amazon.com: Search Engine Optimization for...

The book is comprehensive. It covers all the basic about SEO. You will have a good understanding about SEO.
Also, combine it with WSOs that teach SEO. SEO WSOs will give you advance techniques in SEO.

    2. For starter, you could create an adsense site and rank it to #1 with your SEO skill. You can see how good is your SEO skill from your adsense site's ranking.

Awesome, will do. As far as an adsense site, could I just use a blog? Just for practice?

        Much appreciated guys, study time!
Edit: setting up Adsense for my blog now, I will try not to ask questions that can be easily answered through a simple google search anymore lol

To get started, focus on one thing and on one thing only! Be careful not to get carried away with all the information out there.

Rather, decide on one thing, stick to it and get really good at it. Also, don't try to be perfect - just get started & take action. allow yourself to make mistakes - they are part of the process.

If you want to get into SEO, pick a site like seomoz.org and read various articles every day. But again, SEO is huge and there are thousands of pages of content. Learn the basics and take action. There are also lots of great WSO's for $7-$9 - of course, not all of it.
