Rankings affected by links to Amazon basket?

Hi all,

I've not changed anything on my Amazon affiliate site, except for adding links to the Amazon basket, which is in a form. All my other links to Amazon have rel="nofollow'. This morning, my rankings have plummeted from no. 1 and 2 spots for my keyword to page 70 plus. Could it be due to the forms I implemented? Is there a way to add 'nofollow' to forms?

Thanks,

J

It's more likely just normal google dance. However, you are right about nofollowing affiliate links.

I was just going to ask how old these sites are. Any "unnatural" on-page / off-page SEO going on? Hopefully it's just doing the G-dance.

If you want to test yourself, why don't you remove the exact form and see what happens to your rank?

Anyhow, you are not changing any other On-Page SEO settings, it should be fine, but to overcome this, it is better if you can get some backlinks and get stable position back.

Thanks guys. I've removed most of the forms now (there are quite a few pages) so I'll keep an eye over the coming weeks.

Jodie, I have changed just two or three words on a page and ended up in a google dance. So you will probably see that come back to where it was before, given a few weeks.

Editing and putting a form on does not mean it is bad, it just changed the contents enough that it most likely went into a google dance

Thanks Jeannie. My homepage has completely disappeared from all keyword searches. Not in the the top 100... Have you experienced the same sort of thing?

I guess there's no complete distinction between a Google dance and a Google slap?

I'm suffering the same problem with my amazon site too. It's about 6 months old now and was starting to rank nicely and was increasing in visits. Was also getting a few sales. Then rounds about the 10th May my rankings dropped dramatically.

I've heard other people suffer the same rounds about the same time and that it has something to do with the penguin update and backlink over optimisation.

I have my doubts about the over optimisation penalty as it would be too easy to manipulate your competitors rankings so it must be something else.

I'm currently in the process of stripping my website back to try find out what the problem is.

Please inform us if you find what your problem is.

Just one question. Are you using Reviewazon by any chance???

I don't think you would get a slap for changing a few words or adding a form UNLESS you keyword stuffed.

You make changes, Google runs it through the filters and you have to dance around a while. Just keep working on your site. Can't say why it is not in the top 100 any more. Give it a few weeks - sometimes 3 to 6 weeks before it all settles in.

Sorry to hear that aidylad. I don't use Reviewazon - I write my own articles from scratch. I am wondering now whether it is indeed a slap. My site has totally disappeared for all my keywords except for some long tail ones where my tags are ranking. There has been no movement now and it's coming up to a week. This happened some weeks ago for the same site, but everything went back to normal within a few days.

I don't think I've over optimized, but who knows? It happened the day after I added those forms, which don't include the 'nofollow' links. Coincidence maybe, but I'm going to give it another week or so before drawing any conclusions.

    Best of luck.

I've just noticed that the only 'pages' of my site that are indexed are my 'tag' pages, so just a collection of similar tagged posts. Not sure why these are ok, but actual pages have all but disappeared.

    Hi all,

It's been 10 days and my site has not reappeared in the top 100. For my main keyword, it appears to be hovering around the 270th position! My site was hit on the 29th June, so this doesn't tie in with Penguin updates, so it must be a penalty(?) No messages in Webmaster and I've checked my site's keyword density which is around 2%.

Do I leave this site and move on? It was converting really well, but I don't want to move on to a new site until I understand where I went wrong... If it was the Google dance, surely it would be moving around rankings for my keywords?

That's right, I continued adding links (just in case) and today, after nearly 2 weeks, my site has gone to no. 1 and 2 spots for all my keywords plus more! My homepage reappeared overnight and I'm seeing nearly double the amount of traffic than before. Yippeee!

I'm happy that you got back your spots on Google.
The same trajedy happened to me today. My site had disappered on April 23, one day before Penguin. Then it came back about 1 month ago. I was on the first page of Google for most of my keywords since then and made a handful of sales.
However, when I checked my stats this morning, I saw that it was completely gone again.
I believe that I didn't do anything against Google's TOS.I updated my site almost daily. I only added good, original content and submitted my posts to best social sites like Stumbleupon,Digg,Delicious, facebook G+ and Twitter.I didn't buy any links from anybody. I didn't overoptimize my pages with keywords.
I didn't get a message from Google and everything is normal according to the Webmaster tools

Do hold tight. As mikeshinobi pointed out, it's best to continue with back linking and adding content in the same way that you've been doing. It took nearly 2 weeks for my site to reappear and it may not even remain in current positions, but these sites are relatively new so I guess they'll be bouncing around.
