    I have been studying SEO for years now and all of the points above are correct. However, the boundaries from Google and Facebook keep shifting. What I'm finding is that Alexa rank is even more important to use in measuring these days, that contrary to popular opinion, PageRank isn't quite dead and PR3+ links are very useful in building. I've also found that anyone can become #1 in Google if they do enough quality backlinking and beat the competition (in terms of number/quality of backlinks and amount/quality of content). Regarding site structure, I'd definitely try to be niche and build keywords into the menus if possible, otherwise if not, more promotion in general is needed .
