Im looking for new website names, .WS has much better names to choose from but will .com rate better with the search engines?

lets say I can have a .com as

my-website-now.com or a .ws as mywebsitenow.ws

Which is better for SEO? I noticed that in the search engines the site with the dashes seem to show up much later in the results.

If you can get a .com, that is always better (not only for SERP results, but also because people are used to it and trust if over a .ws or .whatever). As for ranking higher, if you promote a hyphenated website, it will rank just as well as a non-hyphenated one.

The only reason a .com is better is if you plan to flip the site. Other than that, no, a .com will not rank higher than a .ws site. It has more to do with keyword density in the domain name and SEO.

The extension has very little to do with the
    rankings DIRECTLY.

However, indirectly, it may affect the site's
performance for the reasons that flash pointed
    out above.

Having the keywords in your domain is very helpful
so, if you can only get something close to what
you want in a WS, then go for it.

But try .com, .org, .net, .info, and .biz first
    in that order.

A .org I heard google loves these, though if my site is a people search site will google still love it being a .org - does it matter than Im not a non-profit organisation?

What do u think about .us ? My site is directly related to U.S, though I also target Canada since they are close.
