The meta description tag isn't used for rankings, but it's what users see when they decide what to click on. So put some effort into making it descriptive and relevant.

If you have duplicate descriptions, a warning will appear in both Google and Bing's WMT, but you will not be penalised for it. Slight variations of description won't get you penalised either, but it's not best practice.

Just because it ain't used by google doesn't mean it isn't used by yahoo, bing, or other search engines. I suggest you make unique descriptions around 150 characters for each one explaining what that page is about. Include the keyword once in the description near the front as well.

I doubt if you will get bannerized, but it is just lame and lazy to use the same...speaking of which this is how I often roll...well it is indeed lame and lazy But laziness is a virtue, ain't it

This is not a good Idea!

    Let me share my experience,

What i did was, I wrote a Meta for Home page & to one of my inner page i wrote the same with little difference at the end like yours,

    Result was:
When I search that inner page keyword Google shows me the link of home page
& even when i check the Cache of my inner page the cache link showed is of home page.
i.e google bot counted both as same page

So always give unique Meta i.e unique title from the starting word, same goes with description etc..

Google will not ban your site by making the same meta description tags. And for SEO, its useless nowadays.

First of all, meta descriptions are in no way useless for SEO. Meta descriptions have a great contribution when talking about SERP CTR. This is a ranking factor that Google uses.
I would make these descriptions as natural as possible. Changing a word at the end of each description is not enough. You are better off leaving the meta description tag empty in order to let Google decide what snippet of text is most relevant for a certain page.
