Can an exact match domain. info rank as good as a .com/net/org domain ?

Domain is 6+ years old with little to none backlinks for now.

Thanks for your time.

This question is asked a lot. Most claim that .info is harder to rank than .com, .net, .org, etc. I haven't really seen much of a difference though.

That said, I think EMD's have lost a lot of power recently. So I wouldn't rely too heavily on them.

I think you'd be just as well off using a niche-related domain and targeting keywords on the pages themselves.

      For example, "nichekeywords.com/keywords-you-are-targeting/"

I agree with that. However, an EMD will still work in the very short-term -One of my sites was being outranked by an EMD garbage site last month, but that site has since moved down the ranks... so it works, but not for long. Bottom line: if it's something spammy you're after, instead of something long-term, go with the EMD. Otherwise, put some good quality content and SEO on the page and optimize your permalinks as shown here.

As for .info, it's generally thought that .net and .org are better, but if you can get a variation of the .com, you're smart to go with that if you can get the .com. For example, instead of makemoneyonline.info, pick up make-money-online.com. Even with all of those dashes, you will do better than if you go for the info domain (at least it has worked with my own domains).

As a caveat, I would limit it to 2 dashes.

As a last resort, you could even go with a semi-related domain. For example, instead of make-money-online.com, go for makingmoneyonline.com... you get the point. The EMD will not kill a great website with great content, but it will definitely take longer for Google to rank you appropriately.

        Good luck.

EMD is not working very well now. Also info domains look spammy on many people's eyes. They don't trust info domains.
So I prefer you to build your site with a .com/.net or .org .. if not, choose a country specific domain such as .ru

.info is fine, I am outranking a number of .coms for competing keywords easily...

From my experience com/net/org are the easiest to rank. EMD is still working for me. info can be a little more difficult but with strong backlinks it is possible to rank any domain. i.e. I have some success ranking .co.uk domains in the g.com.

After a recent test that I concluded last month with a .com and a .info domain name. No, in that instance the .info was harder than hell to rank, while the .com ranked within weeks. The keyword was a low competition term, the sites were hosted separately and the content was completely unique on both sites.

I have been phasing out my EMD's for future project use, and will continue to build authority sites rather than building small niche sites.

Whoa - we have a lot of contradicting replies, perhaps there should be a poll - and let the majority win
