What makes some people #1 on youtube if you have a very similar video? Like the other day I was watching a video called 'funny failures' that guy had like 1.5m views, though he only had 2 videos and a short title.

Is it the more views, the more popular, therefor the more youtube promote that video? Is it the more videos you watch, the more they help your videos go to #1 search result? Is there anything about from the video title that will help my video rankings?

  • His video may have been promoted virally, ie - through high traffic social sites. Just add as many relevant keyword tags to your video as possible and make sure the video title is descriptive.
  • You are getting into Google Universal here - if you have a website with a video intro based on anchor text/keywords then there is an excellent chance that your site may get higher SERP - BUT and this is probably the most controversial thing I have ever posted in Warriors - it does depend on the spoken voice. Google is after clear concise English - it is learning to read the spoken word and look for keywords - its the same technology that the Banks are using on their telephone question systems.

  • In what period of time did he/she have 1.5M views?

    What is the PR of the video? if it was greater than 3, then He/she probably built a lot of backlinks to the video. Probably also in combination with a highly searched keyword on Youtube, which they may have in the title and/or tags

    • You want to make sure your video has great content for the watcher. But you also want to make it as entertaining as possible so people will want to share it with others.

      You can build links to the video just like you would if you want to make your site rank in the results. If the video is good enough that can happen for you. People will write blog posts about it with links to the video so it builds links without you doing anything. That is why you see some high ranking videos in the results that have been there for a long time. Most of those videos have a ton of views and are very popular so people are linking to them which causes them to rank very well.

      I have done this with several videos for a buddies site. We got his main site ranking well and then we built links to his youtube videos for the same keywords and now he has listings for his main domain along with his own Youtube videos in the results.

      You can do that same thing with Squidoo lens's, blog posts, ect. So you can hold many properties on the first page for your keywords.

    Adding such videos in many forums with good title to create curiosity

    Once such video is popular than in you tube search that one start good ranking.
  • From my experience, Youtube SEO is similar to regular SEO.

    Name the video file using your keywords.
    Put keywords in the description.
    Yes, they can read the data embedded in the video, so put in keywords into the sound file (and name the sound file with your keywords).
    Once uploaded to YouTube, use their social bookmarking options.
    Do a video reaction to one you are trying to compete with.
    Upload the video to TubeMogul for distribution to many sites.
    If you want traffic back to your site, put the full URL (http included) of your site as the first thing in the description field - it will turn into a hotlink once processed.

    • Just keep on building backlinks to it...tokeepit on the first page. If you do nothing it will disappear fast. SEND backlinks from social bookmarking sites, is the first level of linkbuilding you should do.
  • up until two weeks ago it was very EASY to artificially up views of a video using tools like "tubeincreaser"....getting 100k in an hour or two...no problem.

    YT just recently changed just their algorithms, so those methods dont work anymore at the moment.

    By the way i myself have a clip on youtube (all legal, no "faking" anything) which has about 1 Million views now. Its possible.
