I remember reading somewhere that your backlinks coming from BLOG COMMENTS must target only your homepage, not the inner pages. Otherwise they don't count.

Is this true?

Exactly as the previous commentators have mentioned. Thought I would add that I think you should diversify both the types of links, the anchor text and the linked to page for consistent results.

Sending a good amount of backlinks to your homepage is a good idea, but you should also send links to your subpages. Seriously, where did you hear that from?

Create backlinks for every page of your site for maximum results in SEO. If you have SEO Quake you will see that high ranking sites also have high ranking inner pages as well.

Its not true. I am building links for a inner page to get top ranking for that page but my home page is also getting better and better. I didn't make any link for the home page.

its been always a good strategy to link the inner pages as well to improve the site throughout. Blogs commenting is an easy way to promote the inner pages also. So it is quite wrong that your have heard some where.

Links should be focused on the pages you want your reader/potential client land. Focusing on your homepage is a good start but try not to ignore links to the niche areas of your site.
