How difficult is it to rank for these keywords:

Military
Defense News
Drudge Report

I fear that my microniche might be too small. I cannot find any keywords that are relevant to my site (U.S. defense and intelligence news) that have more than a few hundred thousand searches each month.

To aim for keywords that get over 100K searches a month is very ambitious. Particularly if you don't have the experience and/or resources to compete with your competition.

You really should consider going after lower volume (and in most cases, lower competition) keywords.

Interesting...I would have expected the opposite. Someone told me I shouldnt try to rank for more than 5 keywords. If all 5 keywords have less than 500,000 combined monthly searches....how much traffic can that possibly translate into?

My niche is U.S. defense and Intelligence News. When I look at my competition, nearly all their keywords have less than 100 searches. What good does it do to rank for a keyword that no one is looking for?

There's no magic number to aim for, but when starting out targeting keywords with at least 1000 monthly searches is common.

If you were ranked at #1 for each of the keywords (with a combined monthly search volume of 500K), then you could expect around 175K visitors per month or about 5800 visitors per day.

For most people, they wouldn't get a fraction of that sort of traffic.

When you say that you are looking at your competition, how are you determining their keywords have low search volume?

Before I answer that, let me say that I am a total newbie at this (if you didnt figure that out). I have found some sites that let you type in the URL of your competition, and it shows you what keywords they are ranking for. In addition, it also shows you the amount of searches each keyword has. When I type in their website, they all seem to be ranking well for something like 30 keywords, with a combined monthly search total of about 10,000.

This makes sense, because when I research the keywords I would like to have for my site, they are also fairly low. The keywords I suggested in the original thread at least have people looking for them! On top of that, google says they are low competition. So that is good, right? Low competition, but lots of people searching!

You mean the competition bar in Google keyword tool? That doesn't refer to the competition on the organic search results, that refers to the competition between the advertisers for that keyword.

A combined monthly search volume of 10K is more realistic, but would most likely take a lot of effort in your niche.

In regards, to "low competition", that's probably the 2nd biggest keyword research mistake that beginners make. It refers to the Adwords competition and not how difficult it is to rank for that keyword.

Have a read of my article on keyword research mistakes that hopefully will make things a bit clearer.

here's a suggestion: if you are just using a keyword generation tool, you want to turn those keywords into phrases. "Military" is about as vague a keyword as "dog." Something like "special military ops tactics" - or whatever - is what you need to think about. Niche it down, babe! Niche it down!!!

The easiest way to check how much competition you'll be up against for a particular keyword phrase is to just search for it on Google.

Overall, what you're looking for a phrase with high search volume (lots of people searching) and low competition (not many search results in Google). That part will get your traffic.

Random example: 12,100 searches per month but only 2,000,000 search results. That would be good.

But there's another, vital, part to this - and that's the money you'll make from AdSense, if that's how you'll monetize the site.

Take a look at the Google search results page for your keyword phrase. Are there lots of AdSense ads? Yes. Good! No? Try thinking of a different phrase. If advertisers aren't bidding on a keyword, you won't get targeted ads on your own site.

People often don't consider that it's the combination of both these factors - being able to rank and the level of advertising - that determines if a keyword target is profitable. Looking at one without the other is a mistake.

Use traffic travis. This is free and you can find the difficulty of your keywords.

I tried traffic travis, it doesnt work on my Mac :-(

Just to clarify, here are my current keywords: Iran news, Syria News, Defense News, Military Imtelligence, Libya News

I was thinking about switching or adding the keywords in my initial post because they had many more searches. I have used every keyword tool google has to offer and they all say low competition. I will try some of the others mentioned in this post as well.

Also, anyone care to comment on the "don't try to rank for more than 5 keywords" rule that I was told. Is that a correct strategy? because many of my competitors rank for dozens of keywords, although I am not sure that means they are trying or not.
