All backlinks and indexed pages would be credited to the main domain, so in a way, yes. So whatever you decide to do with your subdomain, make sure it isn't harmful, as in paying $25 to have 5,000 garbage back links etc..

Absolutely false. Subdomains are considered separate sites altogether.

There is no credit to the main domain whatsoever. Or
      the other way around. Nothing.

There is no reason to get a subdomain unless you want a complete
site distanced from the main one. Better to do just
sub pages of the main domain.

Popular uses are for blogs, forums, email, etc. Even those can
be done easily with subfolders, not subdomains.

I pretty much wanna get a BIG blog up and running and do SEO properly but then at the same time I want to experiment with modifying themes and running test scripts etc on a subdomain. Example: hello dot mysite dot com

What about that? will that affect the SEO of www dot mysite dot com ?

What paulg said but if you absolutely must have a subdomain then to get juice to it, make sure you link from main domain to subdomain.

Why you using subdomain anyway? Are you writing some funky word?

Sub Domain is being treated as an indivual domain. It will not harm your main domain SEO.
