Shorter URLS are generally easier to remember. They're also beneficial in terms of offsite promotion (word of mouth, print media etc)

Its much easier to remember yoursite.com opposed to yoursiteisthebestsiteintheworld.com

Im sure there are more reasons, many of which elude me at the moment. Most often its just a personal preference.

Just simple, choosing short urls can be easily remembered and inputed rather than the long ones. And also short urls really do have a high potential to be clicked if you saw its link rather than the long ones.

There aren't any drawbacks unless you're trying to create a memorable domain or brand. Obviously don't go overboard. But a long domain name is just fine.

    • Short URLs get more clicks and are easier to remember. They are useful for those who use Twitter marketing because they can easily fit the 140-character limit. They also make links more manageable and promote sharing.

Where do you people come up this stuff?
Short urls get more clicks? You gotta be kidding.

I guess you haven't heard, or don't know, that twitter automatically
shortens urls in tweets. Length of url is moot.

        Just nonsense.

See first of all if url is long ,user wont remember eaisly second thing if you stuff keyword in url search engine wont like it.so long url is not good for neither user prespective nor user prespective.

No drawbacks with regards to SEO.

But I do lose sleep at night contemplating on if (and how) I should shorten the URL or change the URL structure.

According to me long url names are very hard to remember. When you use short url names it is easy to remember and it will have more clicks and also keep in mind make use some keywords to name it, avoid stuffing numbers. Thanks.

Short URL are recommended because they are easy to remember and share. If you are using long URLs there is no problem in that. But if you want people to remember it for long time than you need to make it short and simple.

For a long time it's been taught that you want a kw exact match domain,(the kw people are searching for) it adds alittle to your site grade.(not as much as it use to but everyone I have bought courses from still teaches it, some add a buyer word on the end or "The" before the kw or add an "s" at the end, and as long as the KW is in the title it considered a good domain)
Domain with kw, heading 1,2,3 with kw, title with kw, something that is being searched is favorable, see google KW tool for #searches for your KW. If the long one gets a favorable amount of searches with some LSI (related) kw's also go for it.
It is just been common to stick with 4 words and under cuz it is easier to remember for your customers.(there is also product domains if you are creating a product you want people to remember your brand) So I think both theories are fine, as nowadays there is not as much emphasis on exact match domains, but it doesn't hurt. I go for exact match first and then add a suffix like an s. or reviews etc.

This article on Search Engine Land is interesting:

Supercharge Your URLs For Maximum SEO Impact

Also, Matt Cutt's view (for what it's worth) on long URLs
“What is excessive in the length of a keyword-rich URL? We have seen clients use keyword URLs that have 10 to 15 words strung together with hyphens; or blogs – we have seen them even longer there. A typical WordPress blog will use the title of the post as the post slug, unless you defined something different and you can just go on and on and on. Can you give any guidelines or recommendations in that regard?”
    Matt answered:
“Certainly. If you can make your title four- or five-words long – and it is pretty natural. If you have got a three, four or five words in your URL, that can be perfectly normal. As it gets a little longer, then it starts to look a little worse. Now, our algorithms typically will just weight those words less and just not give you as much credit.

The thing to be aware of is, ask yourself: “How does this look to a regular user?– because if, at any time, somebody comes to your page or, maybe, a competitor does a search and finds 15 words all strung together like variants of the same word, then that does look like spam, and they often will send a spam report. Then somebody will go and check that out.

So, I would not make it a big habit of having tons and tons of words stuffed in there, because there are plenty of places on a page, where you can have relevant words and have them be helpful to users – and not have it come across as keyword stuffing.”
