Is it possible for google to know how many visitors you are getting without having google analytic installed?

If your website has a constant, steady flow of visitors and you then embark on a backlinking campaign to try to improve your ranking, wouldn't the sudden increase in backlinks look unnatural?

I mean, which came first the chicken or the egg? (the backlink or the visitor?) Surely it's the visitor.

Also would I be right in thinking that no-follow links are a lot more common than do-follow? If so then shouldn't we be keeping a very close eye on the % of NF compared to DF? And if google takes this into account, what do you think would be a safe %.

Yes, they can tell through various other ways such as if your visitors have the Google toolbar or if you have a Google +1 button on your site. There are more ways those are just a few examples.

If you suddenly increase your backlinks that will look suspicious, but if you gradually increase your backlinks overtime that is the most natural way to do it.

Yes, no-follow links are more common than do-follow links. Yes, you should keep an eye on this ratio and make sure you are getting both of them. There is no magic percentage per say, just keep it natural by getting some of both of them.

    1. Yes, Google can tract down your site activity through their system.
    2. Of course it will look unnatural. Google will be suspicious on your site, and will check if you are paying for backlinks and such. You might get penalized for that too.
