Wordpress or html site?

I'm a real estate agent and I'm deciding whether I should get a site designed in wordpress or html. The cost will be a few hundred dollars more if I decide to go with a custom designed wordpress site vs html. My question is, if I go with the html site will my rankings suffer a lot more than if I decided to go with wordpress?

I know there is talk how wordpress is very search engine friendly but I was wondering how much of a difference it would really make in ranking for local search terms provided that the content and the links would be exactly the same if I decided to go with an html site vs the wordpress site?

  • Go with wordpress.
  • Hmm, I'm not sure why someone is charging you extra for a Wordpress site. If you were my client I would be encouraging you to take a wordpress site because they are much easier to update and installation of wordpress is easy and comes with a heap of built in features, there are also heaps of plugins to get the functionality that most business require.

Wordpress gives you the option to grow the site beyond it's original purpose very easily (adding e-commerce, lead capture, members areas etc) where this is harder with a static site.

It also allows you or your staff to add or edit content without having to learn any code.

In terms of rankings, if your designer knows what they are doing with onsite SEO there should be no problems with HTML. Wordpress is however better straight "out of the box" in terms of SEO so someone with no SEO knowledge can build a site that will automatically take care of some onsite SEO issues.

If you want you are welcome to PM me your requirements and your quote and I will let you know what I think of the deal you were offered. If not thats fine too.
  • I would definitely go with Wordpress nowadays.

It just gives you so much more flexibility than regular HTML... that is unless you are familiar with HTML code and CSS. In which case you probably would have just built the site yourself.

    • Definitely Wordpress. The future is here. Html is basic and fine, but it is limited, and it takes more technical ability than most people are willing or able to incorporate.

Wordpress has a learning curve, but a non-techie with a little bit of learning can do far, far more with it. I might recommend a good Wordpress training video.

Basically, if you can make a Facebook or Linkedin profile, you're already on your way to having a working knowledge of WP. Besides you can do global changes to the look of the site with a click of a mouse.

  • Go with Wordpress. Not only do the search engines love it, but it offers a lot more functionality and is easier to manage than an html site. I speak from personal experience.

  • For an small site that wouldn't have a blog funtion (making post) I'll go with a HTML5

If you are going to need make post then use Wordpress
  • For a dynamic website go for wordpress. But if you hardly need to change your content then go for HTML. You will get speedy SERP than wordpress if the HTML is properly coded.
  • Wordpress will save you a lot of time.
  • You do realize there's thousands of free Wordpress themes available, right?
  • Wordpress is great and you can buy a good customizable theme like the Thesis Theme and get someone to customize for you at a low cost.

You may also want to check out the current Wordpress Real Estate themes available that may already suit your needs:

  • You should go with Wordpress.

You should also consider getting a 2nd Quote from another web designer. Most web designers (proficient ones at least) prefer to use a Wordpress (or Druapl or Joomla) to get the job done. (Assuming that you do not have any very advanced features)
  • If you're going to be adding content on a regular basis I don't see an argument for using a static HTML site over wordpress.

I think the choice is obvious given the flexibility of wordpress.

Without any doubt you have to go for WordPress. Its the best one for everything.
  • WordPress is now fond of every website owner because it provide lots of feature.
  • No doubt, you should go with WordPress. The reason behind this is that wordPress is very famous now and also very easy to use. Also, Wordpress is search engine friendly too. More n more wordpress plugins are available in the market which you can use in your website.
  • if your html site provides all seo friendly features as wordpress provides then go with your static html site otherwise wordpress is a lot better than html for SEO
  • Wordpress would be far better than using HTML. Not only the structure and design is far more better but also it will be far easier to maintain. However, one suggesting is shop around the CMS applications, look at the design values of Joomla or drupal as well.
  • wordpress is good for now. Here you can get more and more plugins. Wordpress Design | SubashSEO Portfolio
  • Go with Wordpress.
  • Ofcouse you should go with wordpress.
  • WordPress will be more convenient, appealing & google will appreciate you :]
  • Now wordpress has more effective plugins available. That will be easy to handle. I always prefered wordpress

    • No it is not. That is an IM myth. Wordpress and most themes used in it are full of bloated code.

To the OP, here is your problem. You are asking an IM community for an answer on this. The IM community has been brainwashed into thinking that Wordpress is this great solution for everyone. Most people here are not running a real offline business or working with one.

The ONLY advantage of Wordpress is that it can be fairly easy to use without a lot of technical skills.

However, you said you are having your site designed by someone else, so that is really a moot point. I have never found a web designer that charged more for a Wordpress site than an HTML site though. That is odd.

A site coded in HTML can be far cleaner than anything in Wordpress without doing a lot of extra work to clean up the code.

If you are planning on doing a lot of updates to the content, Wordpress can be nice because you can easily do that yourself. However, most worthwhile web designers have their own custom CMS solutions too that can provide the same thing.

One other thing to consider, Wordpress is a pretty healthy target for hackers. It can be fairly easy to hack into (which is why they keep pumping out updates constantly). The chances of you being a target are slim, but many hackers specifically seek out Wordpress sites because of their vulnerability.

I know a good web designer that works specifically with real estate agents. If you are still looking for someone, PM me and I can put you in touch with him.

  • Wordpress sites are far easier to update. All you have to do is log into the admin area and create/edit a post or page. whereas, with a HTML site, you will have to edit the HTML code and then re-upload those pages. Also, I would have thought wordpress would have been cheaper, as it's far less work.

Wordpress should be cheaper cause most is done already. Perhaps your website builder is a noob with Wordpress so that could explain the higher price.
  • I would go with Wordpress. If you do static HTML, you are essentially putting all the control on your web developer.

If the developer turns out to be lousy, then you will have a hard time understanding his site layout, etc.

Wordpress won in terms of flexibility and function. There are many plugins and themes that you can choose from. Unlike Wordpress, you will not be able to change an HTML site's functionality or appearance quickly.

    • And if the site is designed properly, you will never need to.

Wordpress is fine if you are an IM'er. Especially if you are haphazardly throwing up sites all over the place. For a real business, I would invest in a real web designer and not rely on Wordpress. Besides its slow load time and bloated code, it is SO MUCH more vulnerable to hacking.

  • Of course Wordpress!
Wordpress is the best platform for blogs and simple sites, even for business sites!

You can install plugins in wordpress, it's very easy to rank wordpress site!
  • To be simple (Wordpress). You can make an entire Wordpress site in the time taken to make a single HTML page.
  • Wordpress is the easy choice. The real question you have to ask yourself is where will you get the best return of your effort? Creating a clean HTML website will give you better loadtimes (which increasingly is getting more and more important in terms of SEO) but if that implies worse content, lower quality and that you can't focus on other value creating activities, then Wordpress should be your choice

I’ve been using HTML/CSS for years now and I’m used to using it. I have had a go at WordPress which, to me, I find easy to learn the simple side of WordPress. I do find with WordPress you do have a lot of great and helpful plugins which can really change a website. At the moment I will stick to HTML as it is what I know but in the future I hope to learn more about WordPress and even server side coding.
  • I would choose Wordpress, because it could be really easy optimized for Adsense, the update of the content is really easy and of course... you don't have to know PHP, HTML, Java, CSS, etc. to build a great website!

    • I used to do everything in HTML. Now I only use Wordpress. Much easier and faster.

  • I think if you start with wordpress, then it'll be costly but
helpful to get good rank to search engine.
