Hey everyone!

I'm a learning newbie at this internet marketing lark and one of the phrases that's used over and over concerns 'Keywords' and 'SEO'. I was chatting with a few guys on another thread yesterday but didn't continue because it was sort of off topic with the intention of the thread, thus I'm making one here to try and clarify some things.

I've googled around looking for some clarification but I've found that, as a newbie, they tend to be filled with marketing/internet jargon which doesn't really add light to the issue - sort of raises more questions than it answers type of thing. Plus, I hope this thread will help other newbies who may have similar questions.

So if anyone can help with any of the below questions, I'd greatly appreciate it:

1) I haven't determined what my 'Keywords' are, indeed I don't really know why I need to have one. I built my site based on my interest and study in medicines and pharmacology, not necessarily as an income source. However, now that I've learned about this, I want to try and market. Thus, what are or how do I determine what my 'Keywords' are or should be?

2) I assume these 'Keywords' are to be used on the site repetitively, is there any disadvantages or limits on overusing them? [Whatever ones they are??]

Thanks again!

Q1: use google keyword tool to find your keywords. From one general keyword, google keyword tool will suggest many other related keywords (to a max of 900-1000 other keywords).
Q2: You should be repeating your keywords in your article with 1-2% density. Overusing them will raise a red flag on google.

You can target to rank for " study in medicine". It has 13500 monthly search.
Or you can any other keyword related to the theme of your website.

    1. One of the easiest ways of determining what keywords your site is ranking for is to look at your web analytics (whether that be awstats under your cpanel account, or something like Google Analytics).

    2. Don't be tempted to overuse keywords on your site. You are better off keeping it natural looking and better for visitors to read than stuffing your keywords all over the place.

That said, you should look at adding LSI keywords (related keywords) into your articles.

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.

How exactly do I use keywords in the overall running of the site?

What should I make of this?

Search for a tutorial or article on "On Page SEO" to get started, here's one on seomoz: 8 Easy Wins for On-page SEO | SEOmoz

Patt Flynn over at smartpassiveincome.com has a good keyword video that would be a good start for keyword research.
