People always seem to chime in that Google Adwords Keyword Tool is all you need for keyword research, which is not correct.

There are two broad parts of keyword research:

    1. Finding keywords with suitable search volume.
    2. Determining how hard it is to rank for those keywords.

GAKT is useful for finding keywords, but it tells you virtually nothing about how hard it is to rank for them.

Traffic Travis (free) will give you a pretty decent look @ the competition. That, plus Excel / Calc in addition to the Google Keyword Tool is a pretty good start.

I was a big user of Market Samurai, but since it's changed I don't use it anymore. I have now started using SERPAnalytics tool , a full SERP Monitoring Tool. It gives you daily insights of your keywords and plus point of this tool which makes different from others is they have their unique SPY tool which helps you in monitoring competitors. Though they are paid yet they come out as the clear winner because of their features. Try the demo version and you'll be wanting to buy it after that for what they give you in terms of research tools.

As a major portion of traffic one can get from search engines is Google, you need to target what's hot on Google and look for the keywords that could promote your website on search engine results. You can look up for the trends at trends.google dot com to see what's the most hot topic that people are currently searching for on Google.

Ãœbersuggest is a thorough keyword suggestion tool that takes your keyword and pulls Google’s suggestions for it. The tool first displays the top ten keyword suggestions for that phrase, and then it offers up to ten suggestions for each letter of the alphabet. Ãœbersuggest lets you scrape the results for ONE keyword, ScrapeBox lets you scrape the results for HUNDREDS of keywords at a time. There are a number of options here, and your choices will depend on the type of site you are doing keyword research for. Now you can sort all your content idea keywords by search volume, which will show you where you’re best off investing your content-creation time.

In my opinion the best answer to the question of what is THE best keyword research tool is, honestly, a combination of different tools.

You see, different tools use different ways to find keywords and/or estimate competition for them so I use multiple tools to find keywords and compare the competition scores of multiple tools to get an idea of the "true" competition, because in my mind no 1 tool is 100% accurate when it comes to competition or keyword suggestions.

Here are the tools I use...

    Finding keywords
    - Google AdWords keyword tool (be sure to login with a Google account so you'll see more variations and suggestions)

    - Yahoo Answers (ranking for phrases/questions people literally type in on Google is a gold mine waiting for miners, really)

    - Soovle.com (shows suggestions from any number of search engines you can choose from)

    - Ãœbersuggest (very cool suggestion tool)

    - Keyword Elite (you'll need to get used to it but cool tool)

    Estimating competition for keywords

    - SEOMoz keyword difficulty %

    - Allintitle, allinurl parameters typed into Google (combined with SEOMoz they give a very good idea of competition although typing them in for every freaking keyword takes a long time... it's worth it)

I use paid version to view the PR, backlink and a lot other stuff that the free lack off.

By looking at low, medium and high competition I can't determine if I be able to rank well in google.

Combine the result from Free keyword Tools.

Start with Google Kw Tool give you a lot of ideas about your market you want to target.

Then when you want a good niche keyword , I suggest you go to Google search box
and type your main keyword and see what google auto-complete recommend for you.
Those keywords are real demand and be in trend.

See the bottom of Google page, there are a lot of relevance keywords too.

I develop a free auto scrap keyword from top search engine like Google, Yahoo, Bing
and also from amazon, ask, ebay

called Keyword Atomic to do painstaking work for you.

It even tells you how many backlinks your TOP competitors have. Also it checks for you if an EMD is available to you for the keyword that you have selected.

I stick to the Adwords keyword tool. It's sufficient enough for me when looking for related keywords. I also utilize Google's instant search results to my advantage.

But I will say, my brain is probably the best keyword research tool. Using actual programs can sometimes limit your reach. I do a lot better brainstorming, jotting down ideas, and making connections related to what a real person may be interested in as opposed to running off of computer generated queries.

It's like getting to know your niche in order to give the customer exactly what he or she wants. The better you know your niche, how they think, and their driving emotions, the easier it is to come up with phrases that will attract search engine users.

Part of keyword research is analyzing the competition, not just finding keywords. I could be wrong as I haven't dug very deep into the new Google tools, but I don't think they do much in competition analysis. So for those of you advocating Google Keyword tools and nothing else, is that all you use? Because I find that hard to believe.

I've used Market Samurai in the past, but lately, their data has been really wacky so I don't trust it anymore.

I am using Google Adwords and wordtracker for keyword research. If you have a pro account for moz and majestic seo then also you can find more relevant keywords.

Why Wouldn't you work directly with the Google Adwords keyword tool instead of a 3rd party program?
