Backlink question - google docs

Hi all, I have documents (.pdfs) that I'm planning to post on a site using the google docs viewer. I think others may wish to embed the same documents on their sites since the documents will be updated, timely, and newsworthy. I'm providing an easy embed code for people to copy and paste (like Scribd does).

The embed code looks something like this:

< iframe src = " http :// docs.google. com/gview?url=http :// w ww . mysite. com/downloads/theDocument.pdf&embedded=true" style="width:100%; height:850px;" frameborder="0" >< /iframe >

(Sorry if the above looks strange, the system wouldn't let me post code - newbie mistakes here!)

I'm just curious - if someone pastes this code on their site, will google credit me a backlink? even though my site url is sort of buried in the code above? Anybody have an experience with this?

I could always just use an iframe or embed code directly to the document and skip the google docs viewer, but I figure people will find it more trustworthy and it's certain to fit all browsers and devices.

  • it will be generated via javascript... so i guess you wont get credit from the backlink.

    You raise a very interesting topic here. There is still some debate around the web as to whether links in frames are counted as a backlink or if search engines are always able to crawl them. This excerpt from a thread in High Rankings Forums talks about a test that was performed where it was found that Google did in fact index a link in an iframe.

    To complicate things even further, frames can be turned off in a person’s browser or the browser may not support frames at all.

    In my opinion, I would stick to more traditional forms of back link building. Of course any time you get referenced on another website, whether it benefits some SEO effort or not, you still get exposure.

  • the post is too old but it is necessary to answer the question.. I've tested and found that the link available in the google docs is redirected with google search like url and it's noindex.. I don't know why fools are revealing sh*t techniques without even testing it.. If anyone have questions,, leave a message here I'll prove it.
