Prosense theme not as good CTR as theme that actually looks nice?

Hey Guys,

Yesterday I changed to the prosense theme for my MNS site that gets the most traffic hoping to improve CTR.

Instead I had 36 views and not a single click, I know its a small sample size but normally I would expect one or two.

For all of my other MNS I have actually put some effort into creating a nice header, and good color scheme etc. They actually look pretty nice and the CTR is ok. For example one site that looks really good got 3 page views yesterday 2 clicks, pretty awesome CTR lol!

Was wondering if anyone else has noticed the same i.e. that if they actually put some effort in and make their sites look nice the CTR goes up. A lot of people seem to think that adsense sites need to look bad in order for the user to click away but to me it seems the opposite.

    Hey OP,

You mentioned 36 pageviews with CTR Theme in one day, but didn't mention how many pageviews it was getting per day with ProSense.

Across the board, we found that ProSense slightly outperformed CTR Theme across a wide range of sites over several months of testing. It wasn't too much, but enough to take notice...

When switching themes you sometimes see some shift in rankings (both organic and/or images) so (I'm assuming your pageviews went DOWN) that might be part of the cause.

Hey adsenseflippers, I listen to your podcast every week!

sorry I think the title is a bit confusing, I didn't mean CTR theme but just a normal theme that has a nice appearance.

i.e. it is ProSense VS ANY good looking theme with nice header.

I was getting about the same page views with both, I need to test more really. My niche sites are all less than one month old so it's early days.

I actually spent today building a theme based on ProSense that actually looks good, you wouldn't recognise it! But it still retains the same layout and simplicity of ProSense. So I will give that a test.

Have you guys ever tried created sites that look nice (with nice custom header etc)? If so did they not convert as well as ugly sites (like ProSense)?

The theme doesn't have to look ugly, it does need to be simple for a higher CTR.

Distracting images will lower your CTR.

        Thanks! :-)

We've tried other themes that looked nicer, but all of them converted worse for us. As the other poster mentioned, a simple theme is typically best.

It's a bit frustrating, actually, as we'd like our sites to LOOK better, but they end up not earning as much...ugh.

You need a lot more traffic than what you currently have to test anything.

I wouldn't even consider it a test with less than 1,000 unique traffic.
