Static page = Huge image with image mapping?

Hey, I was wondering is it a good idea to make a static page with a really cool design with a bunch of text that leads to different parts of my site ? Basically a navigation menu?

Will this count as inner links? Even if it's "image mapping?"

    Are you suggesting this as a main site navigation? If so it sounds horrible. I wouldn't do it not just from an seo point of view but also from a user experience. That said, if you must, then I would also suggest making an alternative navigation of standard links (maybe in the footer) so that all the pages are accessible. It's one of the tricks that people who build hideous Flash websites use for accessibilty.

      The site HAS a navigation already on the top. I don't want to just place a picture on the site.

      Sure I can make some type of article and put a bunch of innerlinks but meh I don't know. I just want the main page to look cool as hell. The MAIN page is NOT what I'm ranking by the way. It's just so that when someone goes to the main page people are in "AWE" and would put this site as their bookmark.

      OR I can just leave it as is where the LATEST post will be on the front page. I don't know yet.

        OK, well I'd firstly consider your users...Will this site work on small mobile devices because if it wont then you're going to lose a lot of potential visitors both now and in the future becasue that's the way it's going, plus depending on the image size you may have page loading issues too. One word...accessibilty

    sounds like an html site map that most sites have somewhere linked from the footer so the whole site gets crawled faster.
