Hi, warriors!
Today I found one domain name that has expired and hasn't been used already for some years BUT:
It has aprox. 150 backlinks from .edu and .gov sites. To be honest it previously was the name for one of the institutions, but it was reorganized and ceased to exist.
I am working in payday loan industry, but the domain is related to education.

I have read a lot about extracting link juice, how valuable are .edu backlinks etc, BUT:

1) Would it make sense to rebuild it for different niche (e.g. payday loans).
I am pretty sure there is no traffick from backlinks and webmasters have just forgotten to take these links out, but who cares.

Would appreciate your help a lot.

Buy it and redirect it to a new site. The link juice will pass through to your new site

That will be a little wasteful. By re-building it, you can extract more long term value from it.

brswonga, are you 100% sure about the link juice? It would be perfect.

xbluelinks - previously it was a domain for a small university site, not sure how should rebuilding it give me any benefits.

    Check the page rank
Check the PA, DA and MozRank at Opensiteexplorer
Check the Majestic Citation and Trust Flow
Check the PR of the backlinks and see how many outbound links are on the page.

If it are just edu blogcomment links and the Majestic Trust Flow is below 8 then just forget about it.

Minimum stats I look for are:

    Page Authority >25
    Mozrank >3
    Citation Flow >5
    Trust Flow >8
    Pagerank >2
Minimum 1 PR4 DO-FOLLOW backlink with less then 100 outbound links on the page and non-comment.

Keep in mind that this combination of stats is the absolute MINIMUM that I want a domain to have, and if it has these low-end stats then I wouldn't pay more then $30-40 for it.

If the site is in a different niche, how are you going to get much link juice when the backlinks are going to have completely irrelevant anchor text for your niche?

Rebuilding it in the same niche seems like a better option IMO.

People buy expired domains with the only purpose to build links from them TO (several) of their money sites, not to build a site up on.

Makes sense but you often here people talk about 301 redirecting the newly bought site to pass the link juice on to their money site, which doesn't seem very valuable if the backlinks' anchor text aren't relevant.

nik0> thank's for your advice. Could you please clarify, how do you use expired domains? Do you just put on one page and post links in the sidebar or just create somekind of site (different niche if needed) with 10 - 20 pages and than put your links?
