SEO: Is It Over Rated?

We all know that in order to get noticed by the search engines we have to do SEO for our posts and pages, and overall site. However, how much SEO do you actually do?

I don't know about some of you, but when I go to write a blog post, its hard to NOT do SEO inside of the blog post. Because that's the way I learned so long ago when I started blogging. Now I try to write for the reader only. If a keyword pops up while I'm blogging then that's ok. I have learned that a blog post stuffed full of keywords is confusing and hard to read.

Another thing we all know. Google follows people. If you are signed in, then Google follows whatever people visit and buy. An article in the Washington Post confirmed this. Here is a quote from this article:
If you're signed in, we may combine information you've provided from one service with information from other services," Alma Whitten, Google's director of privacy for product and engineering, wrote in a blog post.
"In short, we'll treat you as a single user across all our products, which will mean a simpler, more intuitive Google experience," she said. Google said it would notify its hundreds of millions of users of the change through an e-mail and a message on its Web sites. It will apply to all of its services except for Google Wallet, the Chrome browser and Google Books.
So then, if you write catchy titles and blog for the reader then that person will be more apt to come to your site or return? What do you think? If SEO is left out of the post will it bring in more readers and perhaps less ranking? Which one is better?

Ranking, for the most part, does mean traffic. However, if you leave the SEO out and focus on getting the visitors attention whether through social media or some other means, do you sacrifice optimizing your blog for the sake of the reader?

I say yes to this. The reader is the most important part of a blog or a site. You can always use Yoast to help you optimize your posts after you are done writing for the reader.

Often on-page SEO is handled like a tick box exercise, where all elements must somehow be shoehorned into every post. This doesn't necessarily make for a great user experience.

Everything has its place, and if you've written a long post that could benefit from splitting up with subheadings, then there maybe an opportunity to include your keyword in a H2 tag, for example. But forcing the issue is risky, as even if it doesn't cost you your ranking straightaway, if your site is ever subject to a manual review then you are likely to run into difficulty.

I think the <h1,2,3> tags are useful for the reader. It more or less breaks the post up for them

I would rather pay for highly targeted traffic rather than spending hours, sometimes days and months worrying about satisfying the ever-changing rules of the Google algorithms.

Lady, respectfully ...the rules haven't changed in the last 10 years. All that has changed is Google's attitude towards enforcement of those rules. Sounds like you need to stop using tactics that are outside of their guidelines or stop whining about it when you do get caught.

I am tired of these 'SEO is dead' threads.

Good, stop posting in them, then.

I was just wondering how many people thought it is more important to "rank" than actually write for the reader.

One poster pointed out that a good balance between the two was good, and that is a fair assumption, but do you say that on the forums and then go to your site frantically stuffing keywords in your articles so Google will notice you?(not meant for the above poster, just in general)

You have the mind-set to want to get ranked on the search engines. Everyone does, and you can't say that you never think about SEO. We do...and by the way, this thread is not about SEO being dead..just overrated. There are other means to get traffic, and as most social media sites have given us, traffic continues to come from other areas and now we have more of an opportunity to write for the reader through this medium.

I think we should aim for a healthy balance for the 2. In the past I made some sniper sites where I aimed to be as compliant as possible with the latest SEO plan. It only worked for a short while. Now I try and follow good basic practice and go from their.

They follow, that is mega true. Ever noticed the ads you see on adsense sites? If I visit hostgator, then all the way I see just HG advertising. After that I visit hubspot, and again, advertising everywhere... I mean this is sooo transparent.

As for the SEO, I would write for the visitor. Why should I mention my keyword 5-10 times in my 500word article(the 1-2% ratio) if it does not make sense? I think google is way more intelligent than that.

So write for the visitor, in the long run it will benefit more, especially now when social signals are calculated more and more into the algorithm. And the better the article, the more it will be shared, liked, +1'd etc...

You can have great content that appeals to readers that is also SEO optimized. The two are not mutually exclusive, you can have both.

Onpage SEO is not only about keyword density and h1, h2, h3 tags.

  • Is SEO over rated? I don't think so. You can either pay for your traffic, Or use SEO and get ranked on page one. If you have the money then buying traffic isn't the worst idea. As long as you know what your doing then you should be ok.

Nice tips! Social signals give weight to the Google algo but it doesn't mean to focus hard on it or i should say spam the social sites. Do it probably natural and stay safe!

Writing a blog and optimizing it for SEO is what we Do to get search ranking .What more important is optimize it for readers not to go place much keywords if not make scenes .Also interlinking to blog also makes the visitor trust .Like we did on page for a web page and interlinking is on page factor ,same is going with Blog .
