This is a pretty good lit of mistakes, I would however throw. In over optimization with the backlinks and the user search. Nobody wants to read content that is nothing but 50 awkward keyword phrases in a row.

I do agree with your post, those four things are very basic SEO things which SEO or Webmaster should take into account.

I had seen many clients come up with the keywords which has about 30-50 monthly searches, on the other hand there are more relevant keywords which has good search volume, I usually explain this to my clients as this determines volume of traffic after getting rank...

A lot of seo people has forgot to make keyword research . Even i worked for many months on a niche that i assume is huge . I got nr 2 and got 200 visitors per day . It was not very interesting for the volume of work involved.

So we have to make keyword research before start to develop our seo strategy.

I think I would add "Keyword Overuse" to the list!

I try to always help internet marketers that ask me for extremely high keyword density articles and warn them about being considered a spam. Google keyword densities aren't as big a deal these days but a lack of/too many key phrases etc are a common mistake that people mistake when it comes to SEO!

Great list. I think all of the issues you've highlighted can be described as a lack of caution. In business, it's generally good not to over-think and get things done. But SEO - particularly for new sites - is a very delicate process. If you you think there is even the remote chance that something may harm your site, at the very least, conduct some testing on a buffer page first.

I perfectly agree with you with keyword overuse. I have tried to specify something so old but nowadays nobody talks about.

Especially after that latest Penguin update. This is a good one ....

      Thanks for sharing your view...

Good points and I believe the third and fourth points are even more significant than the first two. Sometimes even after approaching the front page of Google, webmasters might complain from lack of traffic and when you investigate the cases you will notice that they have chosen some bad terms, the keywords that are being rarely used by anyone, resulting in lack of traffic even after reaching high spots on search sites. The matter of keeping websites contents updated too is very significant.

Even after gathering large amounts of links, even good ones that come from highly relevant sources, if your website does not contain any useful and informative contents, how would you expect to be rewarded with top ranks? It is true that some sites enjoy top ranks merely because of their links but we are talking about now, with all those major ranking algorithms which are happening and all reports indicate that presence of fresh, valuable contents on websites will sooner or later pay off.

I'd say the biggest, biggest mistake people make in SEO is not targeting their ideal customer and setting their website up accordingly.

To get links naturally and easily to your website your site must be liked....and if you try to have everybody that visits your site like it, not many will. (Going after everybody, reaching nobody).

Instead, target your "ideal" visitor, find out what they like and offer that on your site. This type of targeting speaks directly to this type of visitor, addresses their problems, enters the conversation they're having in their head. SEO is easy when you do it this way.

I disagree. There are lots of websites on #1 didn't update even a single word last couple of years. Still flying high.

Updating webpages using fresh new contents frequently would help in rank increment is probably another myth.

Good topic. Mine are going to be:
    1- Poor keyword research
2- Building too many backlinks in a short period of time to a new website or a website with limited number of backlinks.
3- Forget a continuity in content and in backlinks
    4- Forget about link diversity.

Yes agreed another one to consider as well is on page SEO over-optimization. Penguin brought that one to the forefront. But I hear its going to tighten up even further.

Use keywords in your anchor text but be sure to vary it as well. And don't go crazy with keyword density - 2-3% is fine.

When you say updating content on site, I have a cleaning service site and can't continually add more information as it will be to much for the client and they will click through. So would adding new content to my blog tab be helpful even though it's not the page I'm trying to rank? Or does it have to be on the page your trying to rank?
    Thanks
