I have found a niche that wide open for a amazon affiliate site, but I was trying to save money by writing my own product description until I noticed many sites including walmart, amazon, best buy and many other all have the same product description for certain item.

So my question is if a product has an official description and everybody else is using it" why write your own?"

Is there any seo benefits? because all of the big guys are using the same product descriptions and ranking just fine.

Ex: Amazon product description for the movie" the last dragon"

here is the description

Taimak, Vanity, Stevie Wonder. A black Bruce Lee fan struggles to become Kung Fu master, defeat a neighborhood bully and charm a lovely video jockey. 1985/color/109 min/PG-13.
and here is the google search results for this in quotes

search in quotes

As you can see everybody and there mama has the same description for this movie.

I don't mind writing my own, I've seen plenty of sites ranking with just 2 sentences so it would be no biggie, I'm just curious as to why so many sites have the same content and they all rank.

Edit: When searching for "the last dragon dvd" 7 or 8 of the top ten results have the same product description.

Either this one-A young man living in Harlem strives to reach the highest level of the art of kung fu. Standing in his way are "Sho'nuff," the self-proclaimed shogun of Harlem, and Eddie, the king of trashy videos.

The TV prints of this entertaining melange whittled down the film's original self-serving title (Motown king Berry Gordy was the producer), and settled on merely The Last Dragon. Taimak stars as an African American martial-arts whiz, so devoted to his hobby that he dresses and behaves in what he thinks is true Chinese fashion. Taimak falls in love with sexy veejay Vanity. I've just started an Amazon website - I'm up to 35 posts, at the moment - and am thinking the same thing. Although, if you write a proper review it is unlikely that future Google updates will mess up your rankings. People might come back to your site, if you actually provide quality information, instead of just what everyone else has stated. A proper review probably increases CTR, as well.

    • It is important to write unique product descriptions in order to provide your readers with original content and rank higher in search results. Using the manufacturer's descriptions might be considered duplicate content by the search engines. It is better to write your own descriptions and include relevant keywords.

Thanx for both of your answers, I'll stick to making my own descriptions, each product only really needs about 5 sentences, and the rest can be facts about the item. I've seen this many times especially for long tail items that are easy to rank for. And most of my competition does not have these products in url, title, meta description,h1 and they have o backlinks, with low page ranks of 0 or 1. So I can build a large site pretty fast, just 10 posts a day is 300 a month.
