Hi, weve recently transitioned to a completely new site under the same url and have bombed in the search ranking - literally disappearing without a trace on many of our keywords and terms. At the moment I'm trying to pick up the pieces of this mess! For one the developer didnt think to use any seo friendly urls or page titles so we are having this fixed and hopefully this should restore some of our rankings but we'll have to wait and see?? Using index status within webmaster tools there are some rather strange things going on with the graph - I cant unfortunately post a pic because I havent got to 15 posts yet! but here's a link to the image www dot bighilladventures dot com / images / Webmaster Tools - Index Status - http---www . bighilladventures . com-.png

it basically looks like google has decided not to index 73 pages of the site because possibly they have identical urls to other pages? This is just an educated guess though, any opinion would be welcomed!

thanks in advance,

K.

When i broke down the image link it still doesn't work.

Otherwise you might need to use cononical tags if your site has duplicate pages.

    @fandango123,

Well, unfortunately, you did not say what was exactly changed on your site and what stayed the same.

Some time ago, we posted a checklist on our blog regarding how to do an SEO-friendly site redesign. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out - SEO-safe website redesign: no need to sacrifice your rankings for blind innovations urge! | SEO Blog of Link-Assistant.Com

P.S. Could not open the image, perhaps you could use a URL shortener (like goo.gl) and provide a shorter URL?

www . bighilladventures . com / images / IndexStatus.png - sorry and thanks for trying to look! just take the spaces out and it should work now... Weve changed our site from a straight forward html/css site to a php/mysql platform - this enables us to have a property owner area and add properties through the cms. in short its a very different site to the site we had previously... thanks again,

    k.

Have you tried submitting an updated xml sitemap after you've done all the changes on your website? This way helped me notify google that I updated my website's url structure, and that old urls are already redirected to the new ones.

  • You either have to 301 redirect the old urls to your new pages, if you still have the old site online, or you need to use the same, exact urls that where indexed for the new page urls. Use canonical urls for the duplicate content pages.

I think the best solution for you is to restore your old site at the URL first (if possible) to preserve/ restore your previous rankings.

After you get your developers to properly develop a site with SEO friendly URL, then you consider making the switch. Also, with your 2nd time switching, you will be more cautious and know what to look out for (e.g. keep url structure etc).

Yup, the image is available now.

I wouldn't worry about indexing that much. Just give Google some time to figure out what happened, it should re-index the site. You may also want to re-submit the sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools.

What I would worry about, though, is the link juice. For example, if there used to be a link to, say, example.com/blog/permalink-url/ and this page does not exist now, the link will be broken, there will be no link juice passed.

So, what you have to do is to redirect example.com/blog/permalink-url/ to one of your new webpages accordingly. And do so with all your important (linked-to) pages.

I'm rewriting the .htaccess file today. I had submitted a xml sitemap about a week ago but maybe I need to do it again after we've implemented the 301 redirects... I think a major problem is repeat urls for the chalet pages and the repetition in the page titles - I doubt the googlebot is very impressed with that - my php developer is looking at solutions to change the pages to seo friendly urls so this unlikely to happen before the weekend... Very frustrating as he should have known that these problems would arise in my opinion. I'm losing confidence in him fast, does anyone have any experience in this area? is it even possible to convert these old urls retrospectively?

Thanks for all the advice everyone,

    K.
