Building privet blog networks - 310 redirect plugin?

Hi Guys,

Lets say you want to buy an expired domain with pr (to build a privet blog network), but it has lots of links to pages that are no longer in existence. I heard that there is a plugin that would do a 301 redirect to the home page to help keep the page rank.

I have been searching for a while and can not find it(found a few but not sure whcih one is the correct one).

Which one do you guys use?...

Any recommendation would be great and also any extra tips regarding building a privet network would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I use a plugin called 404 Redirection, and its free....

    I had a similar dilema and I decided against the use of a plugin to 301 all the 404's to the homepage.

    Instead I replicated the pages and turn the 404's into real valid webpages which I then used to link to other sites.

    I haven't actually done any testing around this but I like to be cautious and appear as natural as possible. Plus if you flesh out your high PR sites with multiple pages it just offers much better quality all round.

    Maybe God did you a favor. Redirecting all the pages getting links on an expired domain to your home page isn't a good strategy. It may be alright if you have only a little juice in the expired domain but what you really are buying with an expired domain is the links. You stand to lose the links quicker if the page you are linking to makes no attempt to match the content or purpose of the original page.

      Just for clarification, do you mean that:
      • Google will devalue the links
      • Webmasters will remove the links from their site
      • Both of the above

      Mike, here is the part that I don't understand when people talk about matching or reconstructing the old pages.

      When you buy expired domains, not always you buy domains that were used on sites related to the content of your money site.

      Lets say you bought a expired domain that was used be a photography site. Now your money site is about credit cards. If you match the old photography sites content by building new pages, how would you link to your money site? I mean, the link will be totally unrelated?...

      Is it that you always try to find expired domains that are related to your money site?
      Or do you recreate the old pages, but you dont link to your money site from those pages, instead you make a new page/post with content related to your money site and link to it from there?...

        I have a few customers who insist that but its not true. relevancy is not based on the domain name or Amazon would only be relevant to Jungles and South America. You can almost always cover a subject and relate it to another subject that matches your money site. Let me use your illustration

        People use credit cards to buy photography equipment. An article can cover both. Lets say it was photography and dog training - people take pictures of their dog. Lets say credit cards and dog training = how do you pay for dog training? Basketballs and Ice cream? You can have an article where someone relates their basketball training habits and then talks about diet. Tooth picks and automobiles - A mechanic can like toothpicks while he works and rest assured there are some out there that can use a toothpick to help fix a car.

        Think about it. In a conversation how many things can people put together? No limit and it makes sense. Bloggers do this all the time as they relate their life experiences and its still relevant. Now if you believe the entire site or page has to only cover one subject or Google sees no relevance then perhaps thats where you get the idea from but the prime candidate for how Google determines relevancy is LSI or to put it simple the occurrence of related words on a page. Enough related words and it has relevance.

        Only if you assume the entire page has to be about one thing and only one thing but thats not true.

        Nope never care about that - like I said earlier domains don't determine
        subject unless they are are EMDs and I rarely see really good EMDs with very strong links

        You are thinking either or but you can have a page that covers two subjects or more easily if you think about it.

          You have been a great help. Believe me, If I could I would hit that thanks button a thousand time, lol.

          By the way, how do you update your network sites/ I mean, whats the post frequency? ...

          I was thinking it would be best not to have the same rule for all sites as it may leave a footprint. I thought I would publish 1 post a week on one site, 2 a month on another, 2 a week on another and so on. This way, it looks more like all the millions of other sites out there that dont follow the exact same posting frequency.

    ^^ I have the same doubt as above. I'm a bit confused about irrelevant linking. If I build the pages on expired domain in the same theme and link to non relevant sites, is it a problem?
