    SEO means Search Engine Optimisation. It's a part of SEM, search engine marketing.

    SEO basically consists in optimizing your site for the search engines, on-site-wise and then creating links outside of your site, elsewhere on the Internet, that make them stronger and make your site gain better positions in the SERPs.

    The former type of optimization is called on-page SEO. The latter is called off-page SEO.

    SEO is an ever-changing process. One needs to be constantly adjusting their strategies to meet the latest trends and to keep up-to-date. It's a long-term war and needs constant maintenance.
