Obviously links from certain directories carry a lot more weight than from others but what are people using to determine the quality of the directory and the link within?

  • Directory Links are worthless and I don't see anyone using this method anymore..

    • Beware of the blanket statement. Last time I checked Dmoz and Yahoo were directories and SEOs all over the world still use those. Like everything in life it depends on your home work and which ones you choose.

  • Directory Submission is the best way to get back link for your site.
  • According to me you can check following things in directory
    1. Page Rank
    2. Index and cache of inner category
    3. No Adult or casino link in the website
    4. Generating Sufficient amount of traffic
  • After Penguin and Panda i am not going Directory links. It is not useful for me to do rank.

  • You could check out the PR of the directory site. That would tell you the weight they carry. Directory links is good for natural backlinks profile. Its not going to rank your site but it will help your backlinks profile look natural to Google.

What is this guys, does some one have any proof what you are talking about?
  • While I have not seen large increases in ranking under my money terms from Directory listings, I have found that they are a great way to build up some non-branded keywords to help keep your link profile balanced and hopefully avoid further Penguin update / refreshes.

Instead of using keyword rich anchor text on my directory listings I've been using things like my url, "click here" "Visit this site" "my site" and so on.

I'm not saying they don't work, I just haven't seen large enough changes in ranking on my own sites to warrant using these types of links too heavily.
  • There good for indexing, but a few weeks back Google announced that they are de-indexing a big chunk of these directories. i would not rely on them for ranking.
  • I use Majestic SEO to measure the "Trust Flow" of the root domain.

  • There are number of benefits of directory submission. One of the main benefits of directory submission is highly quality back links. All the search engines consider the number of back links you have. Directory submission will give your website the required back links. You cannot find any other easier method to build links for your website. This is not the only benefit of directory submission, there are many other benefits.

Online web directories attract a lot of visitors each day. By listing your website in the top directories, your website will get the required exposure online and visibility online. This is another important benefit of directory submission. Familiarity is very important in influencing your target customers in making favorable buying decision. So online visibility is one of the important benefits of directory submission.
  • Directory links are not bad. Just develop a list of 50 directories Google love. If google frequently index the links of the directories without any extra effort then be ensured backlinks from these directories are worthy. There are lots of hypes I see in forums saying directory links are not working. But google actually stopped looking on backlinks from spammed websites. They may be blacklisted some websites and lots of them are directory sites. So if you get backlinks from black listed sites you would not see any result. Try to generate a list of white listed sites.
  • Directories link are beneficial for site like Page Rank, traffic and back linking. However this is old method but still it working.

    • I do agree with you dude...
  • Directory links worth but only high pr human edited directories, there is no more worth of having submission to 1000s of web directories. I have noticed that even many of the small web directories are even deindexed totally by google recently. While doing your submission you can make sure for few factors for e.g.
    1. How much PR on homepage of directory ?
    2. Is web directory indexed in google or even deindexed?
    3. You can install free SEOMOZ toolbar and can see the domain authority of the web directory. I think above 40-50 domain authority sites are most probably good websites to have your submission going on to them.

  • Directory links still work great. You get a High PR Directory (Goongee.com, Apadasiny.com, IFRO.org) and you'll do well.
  • I think that is difficult to find a high pr directory that let you submit your site for free.
I spent a lot of time submitting my site to directories, but only 25% finally worked... is good for having different kinds of links but...
  • Normally you do not get a lot of traffic from most directories. With so few people today looking through directories, most of the traffic comes directly from the people to find the directory entries in the results of search engines. The main reason for the list of directories is that search engines understand what your site and contribute to the meaning and position. Some search engines like Google, it is very rewarding for a webmaster to list your website in various directories.
