Some online poker site is randomly backlinked to my sports niche site!! Could this hurt me?

Hi friends,

I'm literally pulling my hair out here trying to figure out what went wrong.

I have a sports blog where I post every post to stumble, facebook, twitter and digg. I built a few basic backlinks on commentluv blogs, left good comments on just a few of these blogs in hopes of backlinks (the non spammy way) and that's it! How could this site: 1video-online-poker.com be backlinking me? I discovered this in webmaster tools.

My thoughts are that this could hurt my sites rank. I mean c'mon! An online poker site backlinking you is like someone giving you genital warts or pricking you with an aids infected needle! Is this thinking correct. Is there any way I can remove the link from my end or anything?

Not to mention I'm super stressed because this blog all the sudden vanished from google 4 days ago and is getting no traffic when 5 days ago it was getting a bunch. The site comes up if i google "site:mysite.com" so it's not sandboxed, but I'm praying that it's dancing. I started the site June 1, it was stable and was got up to ranking in sot #2 for most keywords which i was thrilled with and no GONE! What do you think?

Thanks friends

J

One cannot be certain but in all likelihood your SERP change and those links are not related at all. Just concentrate on posting high quality content on your site and then get as many good links as you can. If those poker links are causing harm then getting more of the two items mentioned above will slowly start to diminish those harmful effects on your SERP.

This of course is just speculation (a somewhat educated one, I have read a lot of info regarding the matter). However if you are building a business where a few links from a poker site are leaving you "pulling your hair out" then I suggest you re-think you business model. That is NOT meant to make fun of your business, I used to have such concerns myself before. Now I have changed my business method so that it's progress and security is based on what I can control (to a reasonable degree).

    Thanks Martin,

Yeah I think this was due to posting comments on blogs because thats the only place I've posted aside from social bookmarking. Or I possibly have someone sabatoging me.

I also have a total of like 13 different domains backlinking to my site and I'm afraid like 2 or 3 look spammy including the Poker site. I just have no idea why a poker site would backlink to my unless someone is out to get me because of my high ranking. It's seriously BS.

Thanks for reassuring me too. I just hope that when my site is done "dancing" this time around that it will be atleast as high as it was last time.

I know with backlinking there's tons of different strategies and sites out there. Just out of curiosity, what directories do you usually submit to? Are there some web 2.0 sites that are btter than others?

    Thanks again Martin

First of all, calm down. One link from one poker site is not going to hurt you.

Second, your site is brand new. Many times new sites get a bit of an initial ranking boost in Google before settling into the actual ranking they deserve. In other words, your site probably didn't really deserve the high ranking it had in the first place.

As I understood. we're talking about referral spam here.

Is that the case: Referer spam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Your link is NOT on their site. You just got that info from your webmaster tools, right?

Phew!... thanks Mike. I've been talking with the founder of a local SEO company and he told me horror stories about how most of his new clients who have been building backlinks for years are totally handicapped by links on poker, pills, adult, ring tones, etc. sites and its a mess to get them off. Yeah, I noticed the ranking boost at first too with some of my other sites. It eventually leveled off. This time tho I noticed that my site is still on google (site:mysite.com - shows link results) however my site does not rank for any keywords anywhere. It's like a paddle boat that has lost its oar. Thanks for your input and the reassurance.

      Hi Bokva,

I don't know if ts referral spamming by the book but its something maybe in the ballpark. Well webmaster tools gave the me url of their index page and I didn't see anything on there. I searched around this poker site and didn't find any direct link. But according to webmaster tools it says that this poker site is linking to one of my pages deep within my site.

Thanks for the wiki link on referral spamming, never heard of that before

Oh, that's nothing. Give me name of your site, I'll link Microsoft.com to it.

Let's check - send me on PM your domain, and we'll check if that's it...
