Penguin Shake Down - How to Recover from the Update

Hey guys:

I have a friend who lost 2/3 of his traffic from slipping from #1 to #5 for the keyword phrase "credit card processing by phone". However, we were looking at his title tag - and it reads:

<title>Small Business Merchant Account - Accept Credit Cards by Phone</title>

We thought that maybe we should change it to look like this:

<title>Accept Credit Cards by Phone - Small Business Merchant Account</title>

The former - the keyword phrase we're going after gets cut off (within th title tag) and we don't think the bots are seeing the whole title - if we change it, then maybe we're thinking that we'll regain our #1 position again, or at least move up within the top three. However, with Google being so unpredictable - we are afraid to touch anything and might just go strictly by expanding his website with putting new articles on the site and also doing some social networking.

Question: Should we change the title tag to the suggested or are we taking a big risk in doing so? This is his main income - so anything we touch on the index page could lower it. Let me hear from you guys - what do you think?

btw - his site is http://accept-by-phone dot com

Why doesn't your revised title tag have the keyword in it?

It does - I'm swapping the keyword phrases around so that the bots can see the whole KW phrase.

Why don't you have the exact keyword phrase for a single page title?

intitle:"credit card processing by phone" site:accept-by-phone dot com).

    hxxp://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=intitle%3A%22credit+card+processing+by+phone%2 2+site%3Aaccept-by-phone dot com

You also only mention the keyword phrase a single time on the entire site (100+ pages), why?

"credit card processing by phone" site:accept-by-phone.com

    hxxp://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=%22credit+card+processing+by+phone%22+site%3Aa ccept-by-phone dot com
Your internal page (.../phone-credit-card-processing.html) is currently ranking #10 in Google SERPs, your Index page is also ranking for the same exact keyword phrase, buried in the SERPs but still ranked for the keyword.

If it was me I would do a site-wide keyword anchor-text link blast (only internal links) for the exact keyword phrase as anchor-text & point those links at the Index page to try & rank both the #10 internal page + Index page for the same keyword phrase.

This way your not really messing with the page already ranked #10 in Google SERPs.

Why don't you think about having a title as

"credit card processing by phone for your small business merchant account" I don't think that will pull the website down.

    hii,
i also think that by changing ur title but containing the same keyword effect ur page rank , just some other factors.
