PPC newbie seeking advice

Hi everyone,
I've got an affiliate site that's converting at about 4% from organic traffic. That seems pretty good to me (much better than any of my other sites), and so I'm thinking that it might make sense to throw some paid traffic at it and see what happens. I have two questions:
1. Generally speaking, is it better to try adwords or use a paid traffic service?
2. More generally, if using a paid traffic service, any general advice for not getting ripped off/recommendations for good providers?
