Why local businesses prefer local directories over google?

Hi,

Greetings from an online entrepreneur from Kolkata, India. Recently, I have
been doing my rounds at the local businesses, talking to them about the
advantages of a first page ranking on Google and all the benefits of it.

Now it so happens that here in India we have a country wide local directory
service which has gained popularity because of their low cost and high
returns. Small local businesses put up their listing on this local directory
with contact details and get customers from their locality.

While I was talking to some of the small businesses in my city, they asked me "
Why should I spend money for Google ranking or seo when i need local
customers and not country wide or international? Moreover I am getting my
money's worth as I am getting customers regularly from the local directory
listing." I was left with no answer. I realized that if I go to a dentist and
pitch him on my services to make him visible on Google for a search term like
" dentists in kolkata" and also a google map listing, how could I actually
deliver him with more clients and make him realize that my services are useful
to enhance his business.

I have gone through a lot of webinars and courses highlighting all the money
that lies with the local businesses yet I wonder if this is actually achievable
in India.

Why would a local business choose to take my services to promote his website or online presence if there is a local directory which gives him better value for money by sending him more clients.

I could not fathom how I could benefit the local businesses with my internet marketing skills. My question for discussion on the forum is that
How can I, being an internet marketer help a local business to drive more
clients and more sales with my specialized services..How can I
diversify my services so that I could command an essential service provider
status for these small local businesses like doctors, gyms, travel agents,
garment shops, private institutions, beauty salons, jewellery shops, restaurants etc. I would also like to know the points I could highlight to the local business owner as to where "an seo service with internet marketing skills" could outrank a local directory listing.

Hopefully the warriors would be able to guide me on these lines and provide some essential tips for going about with my business.

There are lots of options. First with regards to SEO, without knowing costs and the situation in india with regards to smart phones I would say SEO is good because with local keywords they are easier to rank for and the bring local visitors (or else people would not be searching for "dehli hairdressers"). Next is that with smart phones people have the internet in their pockets and so gps based local Google listings are very useful to businesses.

Other things to look at are mobile marketing for building repeat business. This is where you gather peoples phone numbers by getting them to text a short code in exchange for a coupon. The business can the text promotions to them.

Well, for small businesses. Local clients are important (I guess for every business indeed) Would you miss the chance to have more local sales? Local marketing is in need to sort thing out too before you can reach your local clients. As Connor says

Keywords play much in your online business. Noted that your competitors are there, watching you too.

Yep and thats why everyone who is not in india or knows the situation or culture should stop and not give advice on reaching those local business men. There are still ton loads of communities all over the world where businesses being on the Internet is not necessary

OP based on your assessment (and you are the one on the spot) I would target businesses that do business over a area a hundred miles out and internationally. I have one simple rule in business. If you have to fight you customers to see the value in what you do then you need to switch your customer base e. Once you find yourself in a war to convince your customers of value then your odds of failure shoot through the roof.

Personally I would target businesses related to tourism, international import and export and I would look in Google india and see who is trying to rank but is on page 4 and lower. Theres no shortage of people and businesses in any country that have websites want to rank but can't rank. Question is - Do you have anything to offer that makes a difference in them ranking.

Very targeted traffic and visits would be why as they are the ones most likely to make a purchase or find relevant information

It's not an easy task. Right now, the people you'd like to target are not your kind of customers. The question is - how to make them use your services, because now they don't need Google Places search, they have the local directory you've mentioned.

To achieve this, you need a lot of resources. For example, Google has been trying to make Koreans use Google instead of Naver, with mixed results. Matt Cutts even traveled to Korea and demonstrated the advantages of Google search to the country's top people.

If someone did the same for Google Places in India (or in Kolkata in particular), things could change.

So, the question is, would you be willing to advertise Google Local search among the searchers? Honestly, I don't think one person could achieve this. Perhaps Google will do the job for you in due time... Meanwhile, I think it would be better to focus on the aspects of search that are already developed in India.

Or, would it be possible to cooperate with the directory you've mentioned? It's still citations, isn't it?
