Is Content Still King? Are backlinks the End All and Be All?

I've recently started a niche site. I am only rediscovering SEO now since I last dabbled in it 5 years ago. I am also new to niche site marketing.

I chose a low-mid competition keyword with decent traffic, choosing a topic that I genuinely care for and has value to me personally. From my competition analysis, the competition doesn't seem to be that strong, so I finally decided to take the plunge and start my site.

2 weeks into it, I noticed this one website skyrocketing the search rankings, and is now consistently ranking 1-4 in the keyword/s I want to rank in. Now I really shouldn't mind it because plain and simple; this is a competition. What's bothering me is the website's content. More specifically, the quality of its content.

This website's content is pure crap. It's obviously spun by some software and the author didn't even bother to make it readable. Even the layout and the theme looks horrible.

I did some analysis on it, and the only thing that stood out was that it had a ton of backlinks. Not even relevant ones, just a ton of random backlinks. On the other hand here I am writing my own content, doing research, and being careful about my backlinks, and it seems my rankings are sinking like a rock.

What is he doing right? More importantly, what am I doing wrong?

This deeply concerns me because the niche I am into is a health niche, and the information that people get on sites like these can help or harm them. Call me an idealist but I am genuinely concerned about the quality of the information that people with health problems get from sites. This probably what prompted me to make my own site in the first place.

What happened to Google rewarding good quality content and high quality backlinks? Is the amount of backlinks really more important than the quality of content?

ps: I don't know if I should/could post a link to the site im talking about. Hint: he's #1 in the keyword "reduce uric acid" using google.com /ncr.

what you're seeing is probably a short-term spike. Give it a few months and I bet the site drops pretty far.

Crap content + thousands of junk links can still get you ranked if you're going after the right keywords. The problem is KEEPING that rank.

Post a URL for the competition so we don't have to guess If were looking at the same site/page.

Post the URL like this: hxxp:domain dot com

I certainly hope so. Granted the internet is full of trash, but they have no place ranking high in search engines and wasting space more valuable sites could have occupied.

    It's a bit of both.

If you write amazing content and not a single backlink then you could be in obscurity, and nobody will ever see it.

You will most probably need backlinks as well but most of the ones people go for on here and other similar forums are crap. Don't build thousands of bullshit spammy links, they will only work in the short term if at all.

Concentrate on building a handful of quality links, it's less effort and more powerful.

Thanks! That's what I'm trying to do now. Finding places where I can get relevant and quality backlinks. Mass linking and spinning junk just does not sit well with me.

This is the page (ranks #1) you need to focus on: hxxp://www.raysahelian.com/uric.html

Notice the #1 page ranking in Google SERPs for your keyword (reduce uric acid) isn't even focused on the [exact] keyword spelling, they've substituted the word reduce with lower, which Google thinks both words are the same. You can prove they are the same words by looking at the text on the SERPs when searching for your original keyword phrase.

thanks yukon. I've been looking into that site as well. It's been around a while, so I have my work cut out for me.

I just wanted to check what made that crap site rank so high so quickly, and maybe use that knowledge to beat him.

Also, any advice how I can improve my own ranking? Most of the backlinks I've made don't even show on the SEO Spyglass software, but maybe they just need time. In the mean time, any backlinking and SEO advice will be greatly appreciated. And perhaps when I rank #1 I'll even put your name for credit hahaha.

Content is king and baclinking is queen so we need a good combo of both to get good Serp.

I wrote once here content is the king but who ever said content on your website is the king!? I stand by my word. Content is the king this way: Continuous content on your website (obviously optimized) + continuous content off your website (quality backlinks: diverse, right anchor, etc...). To me for many types of backlinks, if you can't rename a backlink as a piece of valuable content, then you may not conduct backlinking right....

Google pretty much delisted my first go at a niche site. Thank goodness that Panda was the wakeup call for me, since then I've written top quality 1000 word articles with 2-3 original photos and NO link building.

I'm not getting rich overnight with this technique, but my sites are slowly gaining momentum.
