Very surprised at the results, I found I was first for my keyword in google but only 5th in google.co.uk and the keyword being a local keyword I need the .co.uk, surely the google algorithms cannot be different? Can they?

I have the same thing on one of my sites. Massive authority, ranks 1 on google.com for a ton o keywords. Have the .co.uk and have it in google places and a UK address listed on the site, yet it ranks at three against weaker competition!

    Google is an odd lady.

yes, both are gives you the different results because the competition of your keyword is different in both countries, that's why the results of your keyword is different

I see even stranger things than that!!!

Is it new? Takes a while for Google to work some stuff out, speed it up by getting some UK directory links, or links from any UK sites if possible

What I normally do in this case is use Google webmaster tool under settings to set my country preference. You can set your site to UK and just by doing that, you will get higher ranking in google.co.uk. I have done it several times and always work.

Some other thoughts, if not already the case

    1) Make sure your hosting company is in the UK.

    2) Get your backlinks from UK websites.

this is just an educated guess but if you are ranking local keyword phrases i.e. "blue widgets Bath" then I suspect unless the city of bath is a popular town in the usa then google will rank it quicker and higher in it's .com search site than in the .co.uk search site.

why? Because there's less competition for the keyword in the usa than the uk.

You can of course do things like host your site in the uk and have a .co.uk and tell google your region is uk

Whatever you do re visit your on page seo and keep on building your links and if done right you will eventually get number one on google.co.uk

      Hi Ryerson ,

When backlinking a new website this is the most essential thing to begin with...

High PR contextual backlinks done manually (Or get your VA to do it)

They cost nothing and will be the most...

If you need any more help I will be glad to help you out, just shoot me a PM!

it's just through regional settings in Google webmaster tool,
if you set UK For default search in Google webmaster tool , then it's will be on 1st in Google.co.uk

first of all i need to know whether is your domain is registed with co.uk extension or .com ??? if it is .com then u have to change the geo settings in google webmaster tools to target specific location. then surely u can see the difference . if it is .co.uk, then u need to analyze the competitors who are better then u, only way u can beat them is to get local quality back links .

Its a .com and I know I should have got the .co.uk but it was not avalible I have tried the methods above, still having trouble, 2nd in google.com but only 10th in .co.uk and its really not a very competitive keyword.

it's just through regional settings in Google webmaster tool,
if you set UK For default search in Google webmaster tool , then it's will be on 1st in Google.co.uk
Gonna be a dumb question but how do I do this?
