[SEO] Redirect with backlinks?

I untimately found out that clients who I have been doing work on are swamped with blackhat and spammy backlinks from someone who used to do their seo.

If they were to get a new domain and use the old domain as a redirect, would the old redirect with spammy backlinks effect the performance of the new domain?

Thanks for your time, It means a lot to me for your opinions and assistance.
Have a great day!

It could do. What kind of spamy link are you talking about. Because it it happens to be forums and directories i would just go through deleting the profiles. However, if its blog postings etc it maybe a little hard to void the link. I should think they where using an automated backlinking tool.

Im sorry ITMonteur1 I dont really understand what you mean.

easternodyssey; there are many directory links and also blog comments. I noticed seo companies now days are offering to remove low quality links but I see your point, its not really possible to delete blog comments and such.

I'm asking about creating a new domain. For example if I am used to going to website.com but all of a sudden it changes to website.net then as a customer I cant get to it anymore unless its a redirect. However, I dont want to redirect the old domain to the new domain if the old domain's backlink history will effect the new domain. What im getting at is that Im lead to believe that a redirect with backlinks can somehow trigger google to de-prioritize the new domain.
