Outranking wikipedia pages

Hi just wondering how hard is it to outrank a wikipedia page on the serps? Has anyone that has done this able to contribute with some pointers on doing this.

Is it true that all you really need is 10 powerful (low obl, related content, do follow etc) backlinks to hit a top spot on page1?

  • Wikipedia pages are webpages just like all others. Some wikipedia pages are damn near impossible to outrank, while others can be outranked quite easily. It all depends on the wikipedia page that you are trying to outrank.. There is no one single solution to this..
  • yeah so it should be that all the wiki pages are of equal difficulty to outrank shouldn't it?
  • I have outranked wikipedia pages for several niche sites that I have.

No that is false. You need a diverse range of backlinks. You have to vary your anchor text. You have to have perfect On-Page SEO.How do I know? Because I rank sites highly on Google all of the time
  • Ideally get a link from a wikipedia page ;-) Not an easy feat to do (and retain).

there is no exact number of backlinks dude. you have to start writing the page and you should create links. these links will boost up your website and the page will rank quickly. the main thing that you need is regularity.

Looking at only external links/PR won't get you very far.

Wikipedia's advantage is all the internal pages they have linked to each other, go to the source (supporting pages/links).

As an example of how Wikipedia ranks with relevant unknown (to most) internal pages, this image page (PR5) is supporting the main article page (PR7).
    • PR5 image internal supporting page: hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Benz-velo.jpg
    • PR7 article page: hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile

Most Wiki article pages will probably hav external links pointing at them, but that's only 1/2 the links, again look at relevant internal supporting pages.

BTW, diversify links sources isn't a big deal.

  • Wikipedia links are hard to out rank but its not impossible, you have 2 ways to attack this-

Your site - Just keep building quality links
Wikipedia - Find the internal wikipedia links pointing to the page and remove them
  • If you are a brand and you have a site for your brand, you can beat Wikipedia in SERP. For example try these terms in Google search. (Apple, Nokia, Samsung). Wikipedia has quality and fresh content, good domain authority. So outranking Wikipedia in SERP is quite difficult.
  • I hate Wikipedia its a useless website that gets in the way, run by saddo volunteers, its good that google hasnt set them to be always number 1 and they can be out ranked i think but how low down can they get if its a really competitive keyword?
  • Think about them just as you think about another site, while they do have great autority, if your site is more relavent to the niche, and it is the sole purpose of the site, ehy shouldnt your rank higher? im assuming the content is grat, and youll need quite a few backlinks etc..
