Backlinking methods that work

Going back to 2011, back-linking was easy, from what I gather. I understand that back-linking is even more important for ranking to page #1 in Google, but Google has supposedly cracked down on types of backlinks and the methods used to get back-links. My question is: what are the best back-linking methods that work today?

I still hear people saying "social bookmarking", article spinning, etc... but aren't these dead links (in that Google does not give much credit to these types of links anymore? ...or am I mistaken?

So in summary, what are your ideas of the best way to build links?
(And would you recommend outsourcing the "job"?)

  • Who said Social bookmarking is dead? It is still rocking, but back on 2011 there are few methods which are rocking and dominating entire link building style to get high SERP. but not it is not the case after penguin/Panda of Google, you should touch almost all available link building method (White-Hat methods) to make your link building process more natural.
  • SO some high quality backlinks from high authority sites. White Hat method in building links is very effective to look natural in Google eye.
  • David, this is true. At some extent Google gives less credit to old SEO methods.

  • Hi David!

This is just my perspective, as a VA, the type of person who you'll likely outsource this job too.

Outsourcing is a good option. If you're going to hire an SEO specialist, it will save you some time and effort thinking about what kind of backlinks you'd want. But if you have an idea of what sort of backlinks you want done, be sure to explain to your VA exactly what you want done. Just to avoid any confusion and mistakes.
  • I think, these days, to collect a number of backlinks is not much more, being social is too important. According to the several updates and last update of Penguine, it is clear that don't ever try to cheat Google. Always go for the legal link building strategies, collect links from high quality websites. Its far better to become social on social networking sites. Share your legit things there and respond to the other users in regular basis.

  • I am trying now forum links, web 2.0, blog commenting it working fine for me.
  • Wow, so it seems I'm misled I guess. I remember reading on the internet on quite a few different sites that Google was dropping the ranking of webpages that once ranked well because they had too many links that were social bookmarks.

And my apologies (but I'm new)....but what do you mean by "white hat"?

    • Social bookmarking still works and can produce great results. You can also build links with guest blogging, blog commenting, and forum posting. Regardless of which method you choose, write engaging content that provides value to your audience and offer useful answers that help readers solve a problem or find solutions.
    • White Hat is an ethical way of SEO. No spamming, every links are natural and organic.

  • Everything that used to work, still works. Nothing has changed in the past 12 months in terms of the sources/types of backlinks you use. You just have to use public blog networks in a slightly different way than before.
Your mistaken, people that say that are idiots that haven't actually done any testing of their own, they just jump on the bandwagon.

The same way as always with a move towards multi tiered link building.

I put a stop to outsourcing my link building because most service providers use poor quality content, spam the same list over and over, do not give you control (eg the ability to remove links if needed) and so forth. Its much better to do all your link building in house to control quality.
  • As of now spinning articles can still be effective, but it's getting more and more risky (since Google is getting smarter).

I'd recommend you stick with unique content for all of your backlinks. Make web 2.0's, guest blog, and write press releases. These have all worked well for me.
  • Those backlinking methods are not actually dead what are we called dead are those spamming activities we are doing before. Just make sure that all your link building activities are quality done and looks natural in the eye of SE.

    • Thanks! This is some very good information--I just have to put it into practice now.

So am I correct, that in order to backlink using your own web 2.0's, you end up with QUITE a few domains (that you set up as web 2.0's and then backlink from them to your site) - just for ONE site?
