I want to create a news website on something that interests me. Luckily for me there is EMDs available for a good keyword.

Worldwide searches equals 13k whilst local searches (uk) equals 9k. Would i be best going for the .com or .co.uk?

  • I would go for the .co.uk as its more search volume to a specific country.
  • The subject of the website has a huge global fan base. But the exact search worldwide is 15k like i already mentioned.

Is i choose the 8k .co.uk does that mean i am discarding the remaining 5k searches?
  • I'd go for .co.uk if I see stats like that. It's not discarding the searches, it means that you have better chances of ranking up since your just on a specific country. And the number gap isn't so big after all.

  • If your site is aimed at serving a local market, in this case UK News(?), then go for the local domain (e.g. .co.uk). You are more likely to rank higher for users in that country and your click through rates (CTR) will be higher as your domain will come across as a more relevant search result.

If your site is aimed at a global market or audience and is non-country specific, then go with .com, otherwise your search result may come across as irrelevant to prospective punters.

  • Use .co.uk and try to get a UK hosting as well. I tested over 60 sites (back in the adsense days) with and without .co.uk and with and without UK hosting. And the fastest growth in rankings was when using both.

There are providers that give you both (buy a domain and hosting for it for 1 year) for like 19$ or sth. I ll get back to you with the exact provider.

    Sincerely, Buyseech
  • Best going for .co.uk
  • Well it seems that the majority is coming from the UK, so I would choose the .co.uk, since the other 5k searches will still join
  • silly question, why not both?

    • This is interesting!

Can i buy both domains and rank for both? That would be the pefect solution.

  • When local search for .uk is 9k among total search of 13k, no reason to go for .com. .uk will give more advantages and traffic for you.
  • Can someone tell me if i can buy both and rank for them?

Also is there money to be made in sport blogs?

    • If you have good content, get a good ad network to publish ads on your site then yes.
  • Ad network like adsense you mean?
  • Well with out spamming myself out, you could give my signature a look. But yes, publish ads on your site
