Hi all,

I had a site ranking quite well early on and after building some links it seems to have disappeared out of the SERPs. It certainly could be a dance of some sort but i'm getting a bit paranoid that I may have triggered a penalty of sorts. Here is some info:

- All posts are still indexed in Google
- When I search for my homepage title I am in position #7
- When I copy and paste the first paragraph of content for my site into Google, my page is on Page #4 despite being the most relevant for the search query.
- I filed a reconsideration request with Google but they said they found no manual actions that were taken.

So is this some sort of penalty or do I just need to wait it out?

Thanks!

Most likely just a dance from Google. You really need to give it a while before the results can get solid in place.

I think, you must have to wait because its a google dance effect that mostly occurs because of too much low quality link building. So, stop to build too much links and start to build only quality links. You will surely get rank well of your website.

Well that's the thing. I did not use any low quality links. Although they aren't strong yet I have been linking from article directories, guest posts, and web 2.0s. Nothing like low quality blog comments, etc.

However, you should not loose motivation. Keep building quality links and some new content wouldnt hurt as well.

Might be dance as well.. Just few questions:

      1) how old is your site?
      2) does your inner pages outrank your homepage? for example yoursite.com/blabla is in the better position for your main keyword than yoursite.com ?
Hi Mike, thanks for your help. I am hoping that is the issue and have been backlinking but probably should add some more content too.

The site itself is not old at all. A few months. I went through what I thought was the dance as a month ago I finally was in the first page after not finding myself in the first 20. About a week and a half later I was once again gone.

I can't find my site at all in the first 20 pages for the main keywords so I ma not sure if the inner pages are ranked before the main page.

If I search my full page title, the main page is result #7.

Hmmm, this is an interesting thought. I registered my site through webmaster tools and there have been about 8-10 instances where they detected a few 404 pages. Problem is the pages they mentioned were never created by me. They were items like %/node/...

I asked the people at Google and they said that happens and nothing to worry about. Is it possible to tell if I have been hacked or where these links came from?

    Thanks!

I have looked over the site in your PM and it doesn't appear to be hacked.

Conduct a full SEO audit both onsite and offsite and you should be able to work out whats going on.

I would suggest checking the type of backlinks pointing back to your site. It could be a case of too many low quality backlinks.

IMO its natural. Maybe your competitors are also doing well. So just maintain and keep building quality links.
