I'm confused on what keywords to go with and what niche to pick because I'm not sure weather to go for high medium or low competition. If I choose a niche with keywords with high competition, then chances are the SERP will most likely be in the 10's of millions. however, the higher competition keywords generally have higher CPC, granted you can even get any decent traffic to your site. On the other hand, lower competition keywords (from what iv'e observed) make it easier to rank faster to the the first page due to lower SERP and less overall competition niche sites.

Which is the best route to take? Right now I am working on a niche site that when you type in keywords you get a SERP in the 20 millions BUT cpc for this niche is very high... does this make it near impossible to rank in the first few pages? I mean jesus, there's 20 million other competitors.. Am I getting this right? still relatively new to IM, trying to gather all beneficial info..

thanks

To be honest with you. Long gone are the days when the number of competing pages meant much. You shouldn't worry so much about how many competing pages you have. What you should worry about is who you have to compete with to get on the front page.

If the're absolutely tough to beat, you're looking at a long battle before even appearing on the front page of Google for your specific keywords. By tough i mean highly authoritative sites with great page authority and with so many links it would takes years to beat them.

If you're looking to gain traction in a niche, look for keywords that have lots of traffic volume, beatable first page competitors. Always think Faster, Better, Cheaper in case you at some point decide to compete directly by offering a product or service. Otherwise, if your goal is to make money off advertising or affiliate offers, you'll need to select the keywords that seem to be searched by folks with commercial intent in their searches. After getting those keywords, look at your competition, map out what it might take to beat them and then go after them if you feel the time and money put into reaching that front page will be worth it. Also, forget about ranking on the front page... My goal is always to rank in the top THREE, for obvious reasons.

As to whether you go for low, medium or high competition depends on your level of experience and the amount of resources you can throw at the project.

That said, your criteria for determining the competition level is not a good one.

Your competition is essentially the sites on the first page of the results. There's no point in worrying about all the others as you aren't trying to rank page 2 and lower.

Look to see how strong the on-page and particularly off-page elements of the top 10 sites are and make a determination if you can realistically compete with them.
