Google Ranking Relative to Length of Hosting?

I recently reviewed an IM product, and in one of the upsells the vendor made a claim that Google gives more favorable ranking to sites that have longer hosting contracts.

This statement seemed like quite a stretch -- can't imagine how Google would know how long your hosting commitment is for.

Anyone ever heard of this? Just seemed scammy ... even within the netherworld of IM

I think you mean how long the domain is registered for?

Looks are often deceiving. Google does give more credence to sites that are registered for 2+ years, but they have no way to know how long you have purchased hosting for. Perhaps you misunderstood the product's wording, or the writer did not word it correctly.

Found a copy of the sales video on You Tube:

It's not gonna hurt anything to sign up for a hosting plan for years. But google has no way of knowing how long you've signed up for your hosting account.

Signing up for a hosting account for a year or longer will not help your site in the search engines.

So sign up for whatever term you'd prefer.

LOL what absolute rubbish of a video. All for an extra buck.

In terms of age, there is a signal that Google uses among the hundred signals it has for ranking websites but a longer hosting contract isn't one of them (not even close). Seriously, this sort of BS is what gives IM a bad name. And this guy claims to be one of the world's top ranked commision website creators

David James is correct. It is just pure BS, in order to fool some poor unknowing souls into parting with more money.

There even used to be a rumor that for SEO purposes, Google liked to see domain names that were registered long term (with a renewal date far into the future, 2, 3 or more years). This is simply another false rumor, possibly made up by domain registrars to get more money up front. If this were true, it would mean that many websites, after 3 or 4 years, and approaching the next renewal date, might start to fall from the SERP's.

But, it's garbage anyhow.. I've regularly ranked websites over the past 12 years where the domain name was simply renewed year to year.

Thanks David James & Moving Around - I was afraid this thread had died.

While initially surprised, I had to remind myself that in the Wild West world of IM, apparently anything goes with some of these grayhat and blackhat cowboys.

    Thanks again for your feedback.

This is a very common thing.

It's one of those SEO things that sounds like it might have some validity but you'll never see anyone that says it back it up with evidence - I'd say the guy is just parroting what he's heard other people say.

I've tested this and found it makes zero/minute difference -not enough to even register on the scales of what is worth thinking about.

If it is true, then the weight of doing it is so small as to not be worth bothering with anyway.

Don't let stuff like this distract you - people can come up with stuff like this all day and 99% of it is irrelevant. Like the whole thing about getting your pages indexed - if you just build good content and spread the word about it - you can ignore trying to get indexed forever.

Use your brain, test what works for YOU and ignore any of this random stuff.

Google ranks older domains easier because they have been registered longer and if you buy a already established website from someone else you can easily build a high authority website...

BUT there is no way Google can tell how long the HOSTING on your website lasts...there is no way and I have no idea how that would impact your website whatsoever. It sounds like the guy is scamming people to get them to buy hosting for a long period of time.

      linkdestiny -

That was exactly my thought also -- meant to trap new marketers into a long-term commitment.

Andy - Thanks for your feedback. I had made mention of my doubts about the validity of this claim on my product review website here:

Success with Anthony Review – Part 5

I was especially skeptical since he apparently condones and endorses using Google Translate to rip off writers (see my review here:

Success with Anthony Review – Part 4

(P.S. - none of these are affiliate links, as I CANNOT recommend this product.)

Thanks again, Andy for taking the time to respond. And regarding this video and its claims, it's disheartening (but not surprising) that in a hype-y, spammy world of IM, many marketers continue to hold anchor position in the bottom of the integrity bell curve
