Oh yeah. Sea World is revamping their penguin exhibit.
It's going to be huge.

Why do people feel the need to give so-called SEO
Guru sites backlinks? And think the entire free
world should fall on their knees worshiping someone's
article...

But it should be huge. Any penguin update really needs
to unload the trash. This crappy SEO junk that keeps
making the rounds, perpetuating junk websites,
shmoozing google, really needs to go. 65% of
SEO people should be hit, because 65% of the SEO
are not SEO, but poison peddlers.

The truth? 99% of real SEO will not be hit. As
usual.

But then, people mix stuff up all the time. If you have
created a site just for some keyword that you found
in some research, you should go.

Luckily, the real world does not work on that premise.
People build websites on stuff they like. Already. And
are experts or have an interest in.

Real people, with real websites will not be hit. Does
anyone ever listen? Nope. They just go right on with:

I found a high paying keyword!
I got an EMD!
I installed WP!
I hired someone on fiverr for some great unique
content!
I can't wait for the money to flow!

  Thats the underlying thing with all of these updates. Googles entire core algorithm is based around links. Until that stops then not much has really changed. Also what people fail to understand is lets say 5 years down the road links aren't the core of the algorithm (which I highly doubt) then something else will be which may or may not be just as easy to manipulate.
  
  Links have proven to be a strong indicator of quality for over 10 years now and for Google to decide to go a different direction may open up a whole can of worms that they don't know about. It makes sense for them to keep the algorithm link based... They know it, they can partially control and police it and there are no big unknown surprises that may take years for them to figure out how to clean up.

Yep, more upheaval to come in the SEO world. Matt Cutts posted a new comment on the thread here: Google's Next Penguin Update Will Be "Jarring & Jolting". Here's one thing Matt said that I think is really interesting about incorporating new signals:

"Likewise, we're still in the early stages of Penguin where the engineers are incorporating new signals and iterating to improve the algorithm. Because of that, expect that the next few Penguin updates will take longer, incorporate additional signals, and as a result will have more noticeable impact. It's not the case that people should just expect data refreshes for Penguin quite yet."

Funny, from a Google user perspective we're closing in on 6 months since Penguin and Im still waiting for the SERP's to be better. I mean seriously Google handed out a lot of penguin penalties and I still need to get to the 3rd page to find the result I'm looking for half the time. These updates are change for the sake of change. I personally don't feel my search experience has been bettered at all by virtually any of them.

From an SEO perspective... ahh whatever. Unless they change the core of their algorithm (Page Rank) quality tactics will probably still work.

It's high time for another update with a spate of brand new reports since Panda-Penguin reports have grown old...lol.

I do hope it has something good in store for those who follow good SEO practices read good content and best practices on their sites.

Today, even after some of Google's cute animals have gone by you can't get anything decent if you type in relevant keywords. Sales and landing pages selling false promises come up in the search results by the dozens. Blackhat sites feature on page one most of times higher than the Warrior Forum - is this how Google rewards honest forums?

Who said Google fixed things with their updates - when you look for information on several topics you get shopping sites on page one! Is that Google's idea of "unique content"!

I won't be surprised if Google comes up with their Amazon and Clickbank type shopping site - they won't have to do any SEO! Larry Page thinks he owns Page One to himself just because he has Page in his surname!

I saw some really strange movement yesterday on daily tracking that I do. I saw myself on page 1 and 2 for keyword phrases that I was 10 pages back the day before (almost non-existent). Other phrases that I hadn't budged on in months, took small drops and jumps as well. Site content hadn't changed, and I couldn't find anything else that could tell me why it happened. I was thinking there was an update that I hadn't heard of that just came out. With the news put out today, I think its possible I landed on a test server that might have the new algorithm. Still seeing strange results today though, so maybe some of the algorithms have already been implemented. Anyone else seeing MASSIVE SERP fluctuations too?

I wouldn't be so concerned about Panda and Penguin updates until I heard about Tim Carter's site (askthebuilder.com) getting hit hard. He was Google's poster boy for perfect white hat SEO and still got hit hard by it. My concern is that the perfect balance might not really exist or be figured out so we'll always have to dance to a new song when these updates happen. Even then you might not rank well if Google's algorithm is targeting something obscure you can't figure out.

The penguin update is going to be ongoing...so it really isn't news to me. Anyone who focuses exclusively on SEO as their only ad medium is absolutely out of their mind. SEO should be ongoing, sure. But it shouldn't trump brand building and traditional marketing strategies.

Google Penguin is going to deliver one more penguin .. a hard-working penguin which will make more money for google and destroy the small businesses. Despite introducing different creatures by google I didn't notice any improvement in search results .. lately Wikipedia has been washed away from the first page and ebay n amazon has occupied the coveted top positions...do you think that the Amazon or Ebay has better content then Wikipedia....I dont think so......

You got it. The last of the 'little guys' hanging on thinking they're immune will soon be washed away like everyone else. Google wants more money. It's not about quality. Anyone who believes the Penguin is for improving quality believes that Santa brings toys on Christmas morning

Love the Santa analogy! Me, "the little guy" who was not heavily affected by Panda and Penguin always stays on alert and works to diversify traffic strategies. Sadly, Google is still (and will probably be for a long time) the one we need to please for lots of free traffic. I guess moving to another niche is always an option...

Even if you don't completely diversify, it's still a great idea to start spreading yourself around anywhere you can find traffic. Google has shown a real mean-spirited nature this year and I'm sure it's mainly to keep their revenues growing. They're no different than any other company in that sense. They have to keep their profits rising.

An easy way to do that is to 'redistribute' profitable traffic like they've been doing. Not only that, but they're producing a lot of their own content now and they compete directly in almost every niche these days. (hosting, domains, travel, etc etc). Heck, they just bought Frommer's travel guide!

This new Penguin is probably gonna really beat up on affiliates. Just keep your head down and diversify as much as you can before the tsunami hits.

  Sometimes the updates help me or have no affect, but there are other sites I have that I hope start to jump up the ranks against competition I know had questionable SEO practices.

As I said in a similar thread, I feel like this is really opening up the door for Social Media sites. If you can't trust google, then who can you trust? Well, hopefully you can trust the collective human network on these sites. In fact, I believe there's a few up and coming media sites that should start to be looked at more carefully for building up a target audience to drive more traffic...

  I wouldn't worry about it too much... I really am starting to believe that Google defaults to spreading FUD because its much easier than actually trying to stop SEO professionals.
  
  Yes people will get knocked off with this upcoming update... I'm curious to see if it knocks off my UAW sites and wprobot sites which have prospered long past any "expert" on here said they should.

Ya'll going to give yourself a heart attack. I'm more worried about Mike's Britney Spears rant. There were reports this morning of a a guy with a shotgun in his lap weaving in and out of traffic heading to Cali that fits his description. Worse the sticker on the bumper said

"You are next Cutts"

So it was a positive ID for Mike. If they put up a skycam I will update.

Whatever the changes will be, i am afraid it won't be positive. I am not saying this to be fear mongering - simply based on past experiences. It will be harder for the "small" webmaster to rank, it will be harder as an affiliate marketer etc.etc. At some point, the only way to rank will be to establish super-authority sites with minimal monetization (EXCEPT adsense, of course) - the web is undergoing a trend right now i don't like (eg. in certain health niches)...where top pages in Google are dominated SOLELY by .gov/.edu etc.etc. sites...almost as if the web regresses back to the days when the web was still new and consisted mainly of pages from educational institutions. In other words: Google results (at least for some niches) have become very boring.

Google wants to drive the common webmaster to Adwords as the sole way to increase traffic, making SEO more or less impossible on a broad scale. This is their ultimate goal, of course. There is nothing good about this.

Well IM'ers/marketeers have nothing to do in certain health/medical niches anyway so if I have a health issue I rather see my answer on a gov/edu site then at some crappy affiliate site that praises some "magical" solution to my problems.

Having a large amount of affiliate links on a webpage is now already stopping sites from ranking well, same as sites with poor content.

You definitely do not need a super authority site to rank well, I hear more and more succes stories from people who setup sites with just 8-9 pages and who are very successfull with that with tons of traffic. A little extra bit of content does wonders.
