Hey guys, quick on page seo question:
For inner pages, is it better to have h1 tags that represent the actual page content? Right now my home page h1 tag, appears on all pages of my site and I'm wondering if this is detremental to my on page seo? THX.

Nothing onpage is detrimental. Google is pretty good at figuring out what is relevant and important. But yah, you should make your logo or site title an h2 and make the title on the article an h1.

I doubt it will make a difference it the serps but it is a best practice.

I've seen other sites employ this method also, thus I was wondering.

If you have the ability to change the h1 tag text to something that is relevant to that pages content, that page could rank better for whatever people might be searching. Utilize h1 tags strategically by adding the best keywords you'd like to rank for on that page and be sure the content matches the subject that the h1 text is about.
The hardest part for some is making a header that hooks the reader while still using great keywords. If you can do both, that's magic. Engaging the reader will keep them on longer and keep your bounce rate down as well, both things help ranking over the long haul.
