Hi warriors,
First for all is it so easy to rank a website in the first page of google, yahoo and bing with the exact keyword in the domain name, with a .ORG domain name and of course with good content and few backlinks ?
For instance my keyword is : my website and I create the website : www.my-website.org knowing that the exact number of searches for this keyword is 9000/month according to adwords keyword generator and the competition is high. One more thing the same domain name is available with other extensions but .com.
Could you please tell me if this a good thing to start a website SEO with that domain name ?
Thanks a lot

  • The domain name doesn't have a major impact on your search engine rankings. It is better to opt for a .com domain, but choosing a different extension won't hurt your rankings. Find a domain name that is relevant and easy to remember, and provide quality content on your site.

I would try to get an exact match domain (.com) wherever possible. Try not to include hyphens (-).

Make sure that your keyword has 9k searches first, check the [Exact] field in the Match Types menu(on google keyword tool), and also make sure that you can rank it by checking the competition.

As per choosing the right domain name, choose it wisely, long domain names are ugly and not "linking" friendly(people can't remember them, imagine linking to them)

I am guessing the answer is going to your questions will be "no" based strictly on the information you gave. Without knowing more, it could be easier than I think though. First of all, it depends who you need to beat off the first page. Based on the fact that you said that the competition is high, that is the first reason I think you'd be in for a struggle, along with the fact that you said 9000 searches are being done a month on the key phrase. That kind of search traffic attracts a lot of potential for good SEO's to spend time in.

Second, exact domain names are good to have and do help SEO results, BUT there are a lot more things that makes good SEO results appear and the domain name is not the be all end all for good results.

Be sure to analyze the sites that are there on page one first and see if they had a lot of longevity on the web and have a lot of content that is what the visitors who searched the term had been looking for. Investigate who has the .com version of the site and see where they rank too. If your competition has really good site information on the first 2 pages of Google, don't expect to get there too quickly. You'll have to have better content and links than the ones that are there now. Google Panda and Penguin are doing a good job placing good quality sites in competitive niches.

If the niche is your passion though, there are other ways to get traffic and you'll enjoy the process more. If its not a passion of yours, than I would stay away. It's going to be too much work (in my opinion)

If your domain name in question is a hot keyword phrase that could attract competition, I would definitely pick up all the other domains that are available under .net, .org, and .com that you do not own. Some will say that the .info and .co could be a threat too, but I don't see a whole lot of those types of domains in the search engines results.

    Hope this helps!

If the competition is high then the domain name dosent really matter. You are in a fight for backlinks against all your competitors and I hope you have the time and experience to do so!

If you are not prepared to work incredibly hard and spend money then high comp niches are not for you!
    Pick an easier target!

too true. I've jumped into competitive niches and not cared too much about the domain name, but rather cared more about branding myself. I knew what I was up against and didn't worry about the battle I had becuase I was passionate about it and a lot more consistent in working the site than others while practicing other good seo techniques. These sites got to the first page, but it took a very very long time. Never bought a single back link, 100% organic growth. Panda and penguin actually took out some of the competition for me.

If you do blog commenting for backlinks, you will find keyword domains usually trigger their spam system.

Exact match domain names are worth about 1 good backlink more than a domain name that is completely irrelevant. Exact match domains are the most overrated aspect to SEO.

You can start seo with that domain name its not a problem..but you can create with .com,it would be better..because most of the traffic you will be getting for .com only..when people type your domain name in the address bar like my-website and if they press ctrl-enter it automatically redirects to .com only..so it will be good if you go for .com compared to .org

  • Exact-match domains don't carry weight anymore. It's best to select a domain that encompasses your niche, product, service or brand and also reads well in the viewer's eye. Try and make it easy to remember.

If you can get a .com then do, as a lot of people relate to it being more authoritative, even if it's not really the case.

    Chow chow,

You can go with any domain name, but if the exact domain name is available then you can go for it. Make sure to post quality and unique content on your website to get better visibility and ranking.
