I'm pretty new to this but learning quickly. I have been using SEO Spyware link assitant to track my competitors links and have been surprised with the tricks which seem to be working for the top listed sites. Plenty of non related links and low value links also. I have a couple of questions:
  • I have been alternating my time between building relationships for guest posting and doing lower value comments on blogs and posting articles in article sites. How is it best to spend my time. Do these spammy zero value links matter at all?
  • Are nofollow links of any benefit at all?
  • How long before I can start showing up in google searches?

  • So assuming you've done your technical SEO, completed onPage SEO, the next step is link building (social media would go hand in hand with link building)

    guest posting imo is better than blog comments but the chances are it's a no follow. The argument is that a natural looking link profile will contain no follow links. Maybe Google uses that factor in its ranking process.

    In my experience, Google works on a 90-120 cycle but for one of my clients, its been over a 6 month period, (we have top 3 rankings for local terms excluding Google places)

    This is assuming you get a good "strong link".

    My question to you is, do you know what a good link looks like? Do you have your own criteria.

    By onpage SEO are you talking about my internal links and use of key search term?

    For me a strong link is a dofollow from a PR 3 or higher in google with less than 25 external links. Ideally it is from another website in my industry. What are your criteria?
  • Content is the king remember. Updated content is really very important. I think.
  • Don't follow the black hat techniques your competitor is using. Follow the basic practices, focus on quality and be patient. Sooner or later they will fall and you will rise !
  • I'm thinking of putting loads of links out there just to get started. Once I have a number of "easy links" (message boards, blog comments, directories) I will focus more on content.... Is it advisable to use a combination of the 2?
  • Also, I'm using Spyware but this doesn't seem to be picking up the links I'm creating. Has anyone experienced this?

    • In my opinion content is far more important then links when starting a site, this is backed up by the fact with each update by Google content becomes more and more the focus.

      The next important thing is pacing your link building on new pages, I always start with a post on my site's social fan pages. This gets the page generally indexed by Google in about 72 hours for me. Most of the time I will purchase 50 web 2.0 accounts and each day I create a supporting article on one in addition to creating bookmarks for that new page. All this time I am also bookmarking the main page as well.

      Keep in mind I have only been doing this for 6 months so my strategy is constantly changing and evolving.

    • I don't use it, I just use Google's webmaster tools. The reason for this is because if google doesn't see it then it doesn't matter as far as google search is concerned. So why bother? A quick look at Alexa will tell me basically what others have done in that niche.
  • You should be doing some web 2.0 pages as well, they add authority to your site when you link back, and you use them as buffer sites- so you can do wiki and comment blast of thousands on them without the risk of damaging your money site. Create video's, pdf's and FB pages to link back as well. make it all natural so as time goes by increase your efforts by adding more such links.

    • Google cannot see PDF links, so SEO juice is not passed.
