How does GOOGLE handle special characters?

I'm totally stuck on an issue - need some expert help!
Is it possible that the use of special character would stop a very high-quality website, with 100% original content, and no "dark" SEO practices, from getting indexed on a particular keyword?
For example:
Could using the page title (with special characters) prevent good SERP results?
Shamwow™ cleaning towel by Acme® Corporation
Or would it be better to use the page title:
Shamwow cleaning towel by Acme Corporation
