Well, without saying that mine is the best method, I usually check potential profit before competition. I consider the price, star ratings, customer reviews and trend (Google trend) in choosing a product. After that, I review the competition (monthly searches, PR, Youtube vids, etc). So far it works well for me.

No one hands out his keyword here not because of greed but because it will become unprofitable for all.

Simply glance through the product section of Amazon and research every product that fall under each categories until you arrive at a less competitive product.

This. Nobody is going to simply hand out a list of keywords.

First I look on Amazon Movers and Shakers to pick potential products that are doing well. You can also use eBay Pulse to get similar ideas.

I tend to look for products that are over $100 and have a whole bunch of cheaper related accessories. The reason for this is you can increase your commission rate by selling more lower priced items.

Then take your products/keywords over to Google Adwords Keyword Tool and check out the exact match local searches. I emphasise local, as you are generally targeting a specific country with Amazon (unless you do geo-redirection).

Then collate the keywords that have a reasonable number of searches (there's no magic figure, but >1000 searches is a good starting point) and check out their search trend in Google Insights for search to ensure you aren't picking a keyword with downward search trend.

Next you need to determine the difficultly in ranking for your keywords. There's a number of different ways of doing this.

You can install SEO quake toolbar and inspect the PR, backlinks etc of the top 10 results.

You can install the free version of Traffic Travis and get similar information.

You can use SEO Majestic (or ahrefs) to check the backlinks for each of the sites.

Visit Amazon and search any product in your mind, get the product name and head to Google Keyword Tool to start your research.

You can browse through the categories of Amazon, ebay and still find profitable keyword/product to promote on amazon via your site.

One technique is to do a google search with the following keywords and search operators to look for products with low reviews.

    Enter this into google:

    site:amazon.com intitle:"Toys & Games" "Price:$150..5000" "0..50 customer reviews"

You can play with the search operators. intitle is for categories. Price and customer reviews are pretty obvious. The ".." search operator tells google to search between two ranges to display the results.

There are more custom operators that you can use to pick for products that people are not looking for.

PM and I'll share some other techniques with you.

The intitle operator is just an operator for a phrase inside the title of a website and in the case of amazon, the intitle is the category. To find the intitle of any product, just look at its category.

Here is another one for you to check the bestsellers: "Amazon Bestsellers Rank:"+"price: $400..20000000"+"50..9999999999 Customer Reviews" site:amazon.com

There are many search commands like that. You just need to know how to play with them.

I also do analysis of the top 10 results shown to know which products are selling best using free tools like wonderwheel, google trends, adwords keyword tool, SEM Rush and some paid ones.

I no longer go on amazon to sell amazon products. I do most of my researches off amazon and then just tell my VAs to write up the reviews.

This is how the pros make money with amazon.
