This is how I got my website recovered from Penguin!!!

Hey friends, Penguin was the worst Google update and my 4 websites
went nowhere in the search results from #2, #6, #5 positions.

Acc. to Google it'll affect 3.2% of search results. The purpose
of this update was to unrank highly spammy websites or websites will spammy links.

But it's not true! A lot of people are complaining that their website had no
spammy contents and they did only whitehat SEO, but still Penguin hit their
website and it's nowhere in the search results.

But the great news is that I've got 1 of my websites recovered from Penguin.
Here's what I did and you can too:

1. Find and replace
Find on your website, the words like 'free', 'instantly', 'one time offer', 'limited period offer', 'free review copy' etc. You can replace these words
with the following words which don't look spammy (or less spammy)
e.g. Free = at no cost!
instantly = at the same time
one time offer = no long lasting offer
free review copy = copy for your review at no cost

2. Check Title, description and keyword tags.
Don't use same keywords in Title and description. For example, if your keyword
is 'make money with twitter', then use it in Title only. In description use
another similar keyword like 'twitter money' or 'money with twitter' (without the word 'make'). Most of the webmasters do a serious mistake while working
with keywords tag. They put all the possible keywords in it. That is a trigger
for the SEs. Put only 3-4 keywords there which are highly relevant with your page.

3. Keywords density.
I checked keyword density of my web pages. It was around 8% that is pretty high. I reduced it to only 2% by rewriting the lines or simply removing the
unnecessary lines from the page.

I used this tool for checking keyword density:
Keyword Density Checker - Keyword Cloud

3. Formatting
I removed all the red color fonts which were bold + 16 size (We IMers like that style). I made my website simple yet attractive. Easy on eyes and clear for
reading. I am using only 1 color for text on my website i.e. Black. Earlier, I was
using 2 colors - Red & Black.

4. Reporting to Google.
After doing all the work and making my website not look like spammy website.
I visited this page to send feedback to Google about Penguin. At this page, you can put a request to reconsider your website by submitting it again to Google SE:

EDITED: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url
Sorry for the confusion guys!

If deindexed earlier, Google will try to index your website again after submission.

It took around 15 days and my website is at #12 position. It means, Penguin
is not affecting it, now I'll have to do some more SEO to bring it back to the
position, where it was earlier.

Hope it helps!
Now, please don't try to create a WSO out of it

Thanks
Regards
-Steve

Yes, replacing spammy keywords is a good point. Also need to make sure keyword density is arount 2.0-3.0%.

Have mercy. If that stuff mattered...

I love that red colored fonts thing....one more in
the long list of voodoo SEO. I think that's #2,154
      at last count.

If google cared about any of that stuff, man, they
      would go out of business.

You claim you got into panda by trying to shmooze google.
Then got out of panda by just tweaking those shmoozes.

Actually, that sounds just like a lot of useless WSO's already
      under...er....on the table.

Let's do a gander at, oh, say amazon.com.

Title: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs

description: Online shopping from the earth's biggest selection of books, magazines, music, DVDs, videos, electronics, computers....

keywords: Amazon, Amazon.com, Books, Online Shopping, Book Store, Magazine, Subscription, Music, CDs, DVDs, Videos, Electronics, Video Games, Computers...

If you don't have a junk site, you don't have to worry about junk.

Keyword density, have we traveled back in time to 1997?

I can't take anyone serious that counts words on a page. No offense to OP, it's just a pet peeve of mine.

Yeah but that's after reporting to Google, obv Google will correct actions if the site changes.. Won't fix links already built they want you to remove, etc. But thanks for sharing for the new guys, it's a good start for them.

I am sorry, but first of all, where is your proof that what you have done is the reason your site went back up the serps?... This may be a simple coincidence.

Just because you did this and that happened, doesn't mean, "this" was the reason for "that" happening, especially when it comes to Google and SEO. There are hundreds of factors at play.

How the hell words "free", "instantly", "one time offer" are spammy!?....

Just because free is used by spammer doesn't mean Google now sees the word "free" as spam.

Next you are going to tell us "now", "click here", "to your success"... are considered by Google as "spammy" words!
