This might sound silly coming from an SEO, but what does everyone use for keyword research?

I only use the Google Keyword tool, but are there any more that are more accurate - preferably free, but I don't mind putting my hands in my pockets if it's a good investment.

Google keyword tool is very good but if you want in depth analysis of a keyword, you may go for "Market Samurai". Actually it is used by the professional keyword researchers.

  • The Google Contextual Targeting Tool (within Google Adwords Keyword Tool) is fairly good and gives a more accurate figure regarding CPC.

Another free tool for expanding your seed keyword phrase is Keyword suggestion tool — Google suggest scraper — Ãœbersuggest

I created my own keyword database (34 million keywords). Right now I am compiling a database of 450,000 how-to keywords

    howkeywords.com

You can preview it for free, the link is in my sig. Let me know if you find it more useful than adwords free tool.

I use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Google Trends for my keyword research (which both are free) and then for the Competition Analysis, I like to use uTube Analyzer Pro to see which Keywords that I should go after and setup YouTube Videos to rank on both Google & YouTube.

      Here is my list...

      Market Samurai
      Google keyword tool
      SEO Moz
      Seo Quake
      Web archiver
      Backlink watch

Just remember keyword research doesn't only consist of finding the keyword in google, you then have to analyse it. There is a lot more to research after that and there are further tools which will give you more information. The list above is a nice basic list which anyone could use today and most of them are free except for 2.

A few FREE tools I use to conduct keyword research PLUS competition analysis (which is an equally crucial but often-overlooked component to finding keywords that might actually make you some dough...)

    Keyword Research

Google Adwords Keyword Tool (aka "GAKT!) - https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordTool

    Competition Analysis

SEOQuake - seoquake.com (toolbar for your browser to check PR, # of pages indexed, etc.) - SEOquake - seo toolbar, plugin, seo extension for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera

    OpenSiteExplorer
    - Open Site Explorer (to check backlink quantity + quality)

Majestic SEO - Majestic SEO : Backlink Checker & Site Explorer (same same as above...but different ;-) )

IWebTool - Backlink Checker - iWEBTOOL.com (yet another backlink checker)

BlueBacklinks - Blue Backlinks - The world's most powerful Backlink Checker (backlink checker)

    **Why so many backlink checkers?

Because in many cases, no one tool shows ALL of a sites backlinks. So to prevent mis-assessing competitiveness, it's important to check a few of these.

MozBar - SEO Toolbar for Firefox & Chrome | Download the Free MozBar SEO Plugin | SEOmoz (This is another browser based tool to look at various SEO promotes from the good folks at Seomoz)

I've used these tools almost exclusively to do keyword research for over a year. There is ONE paid tool I really like but it's pricy and only makes sense if you're doing keyword research on a level of scale, like if your business was building niche sites for instance. Otherwise, these get the job done splendiferously.

Forget about tools and use your brain instead. There is nothing more powerful.

However, if you insist ... Stealth Keyword Competition Analyzer by Alex Safie if great for competition analysis

I think that the google keyword tool is very good and works good enough to get you targeted in the correct direction. Market Samurai is not very expensive and has some good extra features if you feel the need to get down and deep on a subject.
But for everyday use the google keyword tool should easily do the job and it is FREE.

I heard others saying SEMRush is better, but from my experience, I always stick with Google keyword tool... and of course, I compare both results of SEMRush and Google keyword tools, both seems to be almost similar not such big differences in the results... Ah keyword research, something I HATE but it must be done. Especially when your dealing with PPC marketing, you need thousands of keywords.
Personally start with Keyword tool, and then try out google trends. Bing intelligence is great too- it uses microsoft excel. And then offcourse you have market samurai, traffic travis and a bunch of other paid tools

    4. Free version of Traffic Travis.
